Fleabag's Phoebe Waller-Bridge explains the reason behind the show's name - digitalspy.com

Phoebe Waller-Bridge has shed some light on the meaning behind the name of her legendary TV show Fleabag.

On Monday's (April 13) episode of This Morning, Phoebe made an appearance to chat to Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford about Fleabag's "return" to the National Theatre via livestream for all of us stuck at home amid the coronavirus pandemic.

As well as sweetly divulging that she was called "Flea" or "Fleabag" growing up, Phoebe went on to explain that the name for the show and her titular character does carry a deeper meaning.

"A fleabag motel is something that's a bit rough around the edges and a bit of a mess," she said.

"I wanted to call her that because I wanted her persona and her outside aesthetic to give the impression that she was completely in control of her life, when actually, underneath, she's not."

The stage production of Fleabag was originally broadcast to cinemas in September last year, but the decision to make it available to watch on demand was intended to raise money for a range of charities supporting the NHS, as well as go towards a fund for theatre creatives who have been hit hard by the coronavirus epidemic.

During the chat on This Morning, Phoebe also talked about being part of the "writing gang" for the upcoming Bond movie No Time To Die, calling the writing dynamic a "gang effort".

"I'd like to think I brought some fun to some characters," she added.

Previously, Fleabag star Sian Clifford talked to Digital Spy about the possibility of a new season – unfortunately, it's not going to happen any time soon (if ever), so we'd best make the most of the National Theatre stream.

"That story felt so perfectly... not even tied up. I love how messy and unanswered some of it is because that's life," Sian said.

"The more time goes on, the more resolute we're getting [about not bringing it back]."

Fleabag is available to watch on BBC iPlayer and Amazon Prime. You can also stream the Fleabag: National Theatre Live production on Amazon Prime now.
