Killing Eve season 3 delivers a devastating twist - digitalspy.com

Killing Eve season 3, episode 1 'Slowly Slowly Catchy Monkey' spoilers follow.

Killing Eve season 3 is here and for the first time, UK viewers can watch along at the same pace as the US.

That's definitely a good thing as the first episode 'Slowly Slowly Catchy Monkey' delivered a devastating twist few would have seen coming. But as shocking as it was, it's the best thing that could have happened to the show.

Major spoilers follow, so look away now if you haven't seen the season three opener yet.

For the most part, 'Slowly Slowly Catchy Monkey' looks to be your typical scene-setter opening episode.

We catch up with Villanelle (Jodie Comer) as she's left the assassin life behind to get married, wearing a black suit naturally, only for her former trainer Dasha (Harriet Walter) to surprise her during the reception.

Dasha – who we see killing a gym partner in the cold open set in Moscow in 1974 – wants to get Villanelle back into the fold. Villanelle will accept if she can become a "keeper", but first she has to prove her loyalty by carrying out a routine kill.

Eve, on the other hand, has very much left the MI6 life behind after her near-death experience and is now working in a restaurant in New Malden. She survived in Rome because some tourists found her just in time.

She sees Niko (Owen McDonnell) every few days, but he's clearly still struggling after the violent death of Gemma in season two, which the MI6 covered up as a suicide.

Elsewhere, Caroline (Fiona Shaw) is feeling the heat from all of those unauthorised shenanigans in Rome in the season two finale. MI6 has brought in a "Whitehall warrior" in the form of Paul Bradwell (Steve Pemberton) to oversee things as a result.

If you're wondering what happened to Hugo (Edward Bluemel) after he was shot, he survived and is now suing MI6 for "injuries incurred" because of course he is.

And for some reason, Konstantin (Kim Bodnia) still hasn't gone back to visit his family, but someone is trying to get in contact with him and he receives a note on a takeaway menu: "Time to go fishing."

About the only person who isn't trying to move on from the events of season two is Eve's former colleague Kenny (Sean Delaney).

Kenny has left MI6 after they shut down the investigation into The Twelve, the shadowy organisation that employs Villanelle and other assassins to carry out murders, and is now working for "online publication" Bitter Pill.

He's continuing his investigation into The Twelve and tries to get Eve involved. She turns him down, but later agrees to go for a drink.

And it's here when new Killing Eve showrunner Suzanne Heathcote delivers the devastating blow that shakes up season three.

We see Kenny hear a noise, before it cuts to Eve arriving at Kenny's office to find it empty. His phone is there though and as she's looking at it, we see a body fall from outside the window behind Eve.

Eve rushes outside to see Kenny lying prone on the floor.

Yep, they killed Kenny – and unlike his South Park namesake, it looks like Kenny isn't set to return from the dead.

In truth, it was never likely to end well for Kenny after he continued his investigations into The Twelve. For it to happen so suddenly though is a surprise, especially as Kenny is one of the few good people in the murky world of Killing Eve.

It's a death designed to hit hard, like Bill's death in season one, and proves that no one is safe in season three which can only be a good thing for the show.

There were complaints that season two was just a sub-par retread of the first season after the change of showrunners. A further change of showrunner for season three prompted fears that it would be just the same old thing, but even staler.

The big twist at the end of the first episode shakes things up though. Eve isn't dragged back into action by the drive to find Villanelle, but likely to find Kenny's killer.

Sure, there's likely to be the cat-and-mouse games between Eve and Villanelle as Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer's chemistry is just too good not to use. Yet, it should have a new dynamic that, hopefully, won't end with one of them injuring the other again.

As for who did kill Kenny, the likely answer is that it's just one of The Twelve's assassins to stop his investigation.

The darker theory would be that it was the MI6 itself as the murder is clearly designed to be seen as a suicide. That's exactly how they covered up Villanelle's murder of Gemma, so it could be that MI6 are concerned by what Kenny knows.

Surely, Kenny's mum Caroline wouldn't stoop that low, would she?

Killing Eve airs on BBC America in the US and BBC iPlayer in the UK. You'll also be able to watch episodes weekly from Saturday, April 19 at 9pm on BBC One.
