The Rise of Skywalker star responds to character's shock death - digitalspy.com

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker spoilers follow.

JJ Abrams' The Rise of Skywalker was not met without criticism, with many fans left disappointed by the Skywalker Saga's conclusion and its treatment of the series' beloved characters.

Now, with the dust settled on Episode IX, Domhnall Gleeson has admitted that he would have preferred staying alive in the Star Wars universe for a "little bit longer" – and who could blame him?

Gleeson's General Hux was offed halfway through The Rise of Skywalker, after the First Order officer was revealed as a Resistance spy for saving Finn, Poe and Chewbacca from execution.

Speaking to IndieWire about Hux's sudden death, Gleeson said: "It would've been nice to stick around a little bit longer, for sure. It would've been nice to see the spy thing play out a little bit."

Although Hux didn't get the ending Domhnall was hoping for, the actor went on to concede that The Rise of Skywalker's director Abrams ultimately knows best: "JJ knows what he's doing, and I heard a kind of gasp in the cinema when it happened, so I guess he was right."

Elsewhere, a different Star Wars debate rumbles on, with Force Awakens and Rise of Skywalker editors recently saying that Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi appeared to "undo the storytelling" of Abrams's first instalment.

"It's very strange to have the second film so consciously undo the storytelling of the first film," Mary Jo Markey admitted. "I'm sorry, that's what it felt like.

"I don't even feel like that's true about the third film. It took where the second film ended and tried to tell a story, I didn't feel like it was consciously trying to... it didn't feel that way."

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is available to pre-order on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K now.
