An emotional Ben Shephard gave Good Morning Britain viewers an update on Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper who is currently in a coma battling coronavirus.
The ITV presenter’s husband remains in a critical condition as he battles Covid-19 with Kate describing it the ‘hardest’ time of her life.
Derek, 52, was rushed to hospital with symptoms on 30 March, and is still ‘critically ill in intensive care’.

Speaking on Friday’s Good Morning Britain with Ranvir Singh, Ben got a little choked up after watching a clip of a woman who had contracted the deadly virus but was finally reunited with her family.

‘That moment when you can finally touch your loved one [after they’ve been] a ventilator,’ he commented.
Ranvir continued: ‘Families who have gone through this – it’s not a case of go in and you’ll get better soon, you go in and “I don’t know, I don’t know”.’
Speaking about Kate and Derek, Ranvir added: ‘It’s a dreadful time and I think she’s at home with two children, trying to keep going and it’s still a total unknown.
‘But as she said, there’s still hope.’
’24 hours at a time as she rightly pointed out, she gets to phone in the evenings and talk to him,’ Ben explained.
‘He’s not responding yet,’ Ranvir replied.
Ben added: ‘That’s pretty standard for everything.’
Kate also shared an update with her fans on Thursday night after she posted a video of her and her neighbours clapping for the NHS.
Along with the short clip, the GMB host gave her followers an update on Derek’s condition as well as thanking the frontline workers for all their hard work.
‘So much to be grateful for tonight. Derek is still with us but what a battle it is,’ she began.
‘So grateful too for our amazing #nhs doing so much for Derek every day – wonderful to see all the support for them & our key workers every Thursday. We can’t thank them enough, can we? So brave.’

She continued: ‘Sending love to everyone during this ghastly time, particularly all those struggling for whatever reason- none of this is easy. Thank you so much for your messages – they mean so much to me. Love and so much thanks from me and the whole family.’
Earlier this week it was revealed Kate had been communicating with her husband, who remained in a coma, over the phone, speaking to him every day.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
