Swimsuit or jacket? Central NY saw huge weather shift during month of May - syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. ― It’s been a bit of a roller coaster ride in Central NY this month. May temperatures have spanned 63 degrees, from a low of 30 degrees to a record high of 93 on Tuesday.

The temperature range is extreme, but not record-breaking. This month’s low matches the record set in 1966.

May of 1911 still holds the record for greatest temperature range. On May 3, 1911 it plunged to 27 degrees, then temperatures from May 21-23 topped out at 92 degrees, for a 65 degree difference.

Here’s a look back at some of the wintry — and sweltering — scenes over the course of the month.

The coldest night of May 2020 was Saturday, May 9, when temperatures fell to 30 degrees. That Saturday also had the month’s only measurable snow, which measured 0.3 inches. Central New Yorkers often claim snow is possible until Mother’s Day. However, there was a trace amount of snow the day after, extending the area’s snowy season just a bit.
