JERSEY CITY, NJ - A $7.2 million makeover of the historic fountain that stands as the centerpiece of Lincoln Park is nearly completed, Hudson County officials have announced.
First installed in 1911 at a cost of $6,500, the 53 feet high fountain that originally included images of Triton, gargoyle heads, seashells, scrolls, dolphins and an eagle, has slowly decayed with the basin deteriorating, and the plumbing and electrical systems often failing to operate.
The project involved replacing the basin’s floor and rebuilding many of the elements using new 3-D duplicating technology, which ultimately restored the fountain to what it might have looked like when it first opened.
Over the years, the fountain has undergone a number of repairs and restoration attempts including in 1973, and again in 1988. Disrepair was so significant in 1984 that the county shut off the water until 1988 when the basin concrete slab was replaced and frog sculptures were repaired.
Originally standing in the center of a traffic circle, one possible cause for deterioration of the original fountain was the impact of vehicles that previously used the park as a shortcut from West Side Avenue to Route 440 before traffic was directed in a different direction.
