WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - The amount of water running through the Black River in Watertown right now has never been seen before for this time of year.
The Hudson River–Black River Regulating District has been keeping records for 103 years and says the river’s flow hit a record for December 20.
The current rate is 25,100 cubic feet per second.
The old record for December 20 was set in 2001 when the daily discharge was 10,700 cubic feet per second.
It’s the result of inches of rain that fell starting Sunday into Monday. Lowville picked up 2 inches. Other areas saw 3 inches of rain.
That water is coming off the Tug Hill plateau from other smaller rivers and into the Black River, causing it to rise slightly above flood stage in Lewis County earlier this week.
In Watertown, it’s expected the river will crest at 10.5 feet later Wednesday night. Ten feet is flood stage.
Low-lying areas are affected along the river with water surrounding some homes and vehicles.
