Philip Schofield's announcement he is gay live on This Morning has racked up nearly four million views on YouTube.

The number was still climbing this morning and is already one of the daytime programme's most watched ever clips, dwarfing other recent uploads.

It instantly grabbed headlines and likely saw ITV viewing figures spike as scores tuned in to watch his heart-to-heart on the This Morning sofa. 

Many people unable to witness the extraordinary episode live flocked to YouTube, where the show shares snippets to its channel.

The 13-minute segment rocketed up YouTube's charts to become the number one trending video on the site, which it remained overnight and through until Saturday afternoon.

As of this morning, it was already the 36th most-watched clip on the This Morning channel, which has been sharing content for over a decade.

The most popular clip ever is from eight years ago and shows an interview with a woman claiming to have the world's biggest breasts - it racked up 25 million views.  

Yesterday's show began with Willoughby reading out Schofield's statement before saying: 'I think we all just take a breath at that point, reading that I can hear your voice, the pain, how difficult it is for you, this is a big day. I know this is something you've been living with for a really long time'.

Schofield responded: 'It's funny because everyone I've spoken to, and you, have all been so supportive and so loving and caring, and my entire family to a person have grabbed us and said it's ok, we love you we're proud of you...

'Everyone does these things at their own speed in their own time when the time is right, there's no question it has in recent times consumed my head, and has become an issue in my head, and so I got to the stage where I thought we sit here every day and I'm over there and some amazingly brave incredible person is sitting here and I'm listening to their story and thinking oh my God you're so brave, and I'm thinking I have to be that person.'
