This Morning's Phillip Schofield defends co-presenter Eamonn Holmes' jokes after his coming out - digitalspy.com

Phillip Schofield has come to the defence of his This Morning co-presenter Eamonn Holmes following some jokes on the programme.

There was criticism on social media when Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford joined Schofield on the ITV morning show, moments after he'd announced to the world that he is gay.

Holmes quipped: "I am disappointed in a couple of ways. First of all, I thought you were going to come in and announce you had resigned and I could have your job, but that wasn't to be."

He then jokingly complained that it had been a "great imponderable in life" that Phillip's wife Steph and Holly Willoughby's husband Dan Baldwin never had "a problem" with the two hosts sharing a hot tub together.

Schofield has since tweeted that he actually appreciated Holmes trying to lighten the mood during such a stirring moment.

"Can I just say that @EamonnHolmes & @RuthieeL were utterly magnificent with me today, privately downstairs just the three of us and upstairs in front of the world," he tweeted. "I couldn't have hoped for a better, calming and loving set of hugs and support, I adore them both.

"And for the record, @EamonnHolmes made me laugh, he lightened a very emotional moment and I'm very happy that he did."

Holmes liked that tweet, and also shared his own message of support on social media by writing: "A picture paints a thousand words.

"This is a man who was in pain, who today confided in Ruth and I and who knows we stand in support of him, his family and his sexuality .... Also unlike some, he appreciated a laugh to break the tension. @Schofe hoping you find happiness."

Following his appearance on This Morning on Friday, Schofield released a new statement on Instagram to thank his fans for their support as well as urge anyone struggling to talk to loved ones about their feelings.

This Morning airs on weekdays from 10am on ITV.
