  • His comments in the documentary have been slammed by viewers on Twitter

A former News of the World journalist has been slammed on social media after commenting that the only way the story of the dead body in Michael Barrymore's pool could have 'been bigger' is 'if a pretty girl had died'.

Paul McMullan appeared in a documentary that aired on Channel 4 last night that looked into the death of Stuart Lubbock in March 2001.

Mr Lubbock died in mysterious circumstances after his lifeless body was found in the swimming pool of TV star Barrymore's home in Essex.

Mr McMullan, one of the journalists who investigated Mr Lubbock's death, contributed to the documentary but caused fury on Twitter with some of his comments.

He said: 'The only way the story could have been bigger is if there was a sweet innocent girl found floating in the pool.

'There would have been better pictures - people might have felt more sympathy.'

During the documentary, he also spoke about how he posed as a police detective to get Mr Lubbock's mother to confirm he wasn't gay and how he gave thousands of pounds to other party-goers to get their accounts of what happened.

Asked if truth was the most important thing during his search, Mr McMullan disagreed, suggesting the story was more important than establishing the facts.

He described the story as the biggest in Britain in the decade and added: 'Very rarely did I consider the feelings of anyone.'

His comments provoked stinging backlash on social media, with several users criticising him.

One user wrote: 'Paul McMullan showing once again that he is an utterly revolting person.'

A second said: 'Paul McMullan, what an absolute parasite.'

While a third added: 'What the f***ing hell is wrong with Paul McMullan. A vile individual.'

Mr Lubbock was found dead at Barrymore's house after a party with nine people present.

He was found in the swimming pool with 'horrific' anal injuries and police believe that he was raped and murdered - though Barrymore has always denied any wrongdoing.

The other people present on the night were Barrymore's ex Jonathan Kenney, Justin Merritt and his sister Kylie, Claire Jones and Kelly Campbell and Simon Shaw and James Futers.

Barrymore, who was recently forced to pull out of Dancing on Ice because of an injury and was one of ITV's biggest stars with a string of hit shows including Strike It Lucky, fled from the house before police arrived.

A post-mortem examination revealed Mr Lubbock, a divorced father-of-two from Harlow, had suffered major internal injuries consistent with rape.

The cause of death was never established and an open verdict was recorded after conflicting reports from pathologists. Cocaine, ecstasy and alcohol were found in his system.

Barrymore was arrested on suspicion of rape and serious sexual assault in 2007, along with two other people. No charges were brought due to lack of evidence.

Barrymore, – who has always denied any involvement in the death – launched a high court case for £2.4million damages for wrongful arrest. He received a nominal sum after Essex Police won an appeal.

Tonight's documentary shone a light on the case, which remains unsolved, and also included comments from Mr Lubbock's father.

Terry Lubbock attacked the 'f***** b*******' who he thinks murdered his son and said: 'It has consumed me, what happened to Stuart. It has taken over my life.'
