Great British Bake Off fans bid fond farewell to Sandi Toksvig - Daily Mail

'Thank you Sandi, the pleasure was truly ours': Great British Bake Off fans bid fond farewell to Sandi Toksvig as she hosts her final episode... but there's no big send-off for the star

The Great British Bake Off fans insisted the show wouldn't be the same without Sandi Toksvig after her last episode as host aired on Tuesday.

The presenter, 61, has departed the show after three years with the Celebrity Bake Off Stand Up To Cancer Special her final episode before Matt Lucas takes over as host alongside Noel Fielding.

While fans took to social media in droves to bid farewell to Sandi, there was no big send-off for the star at the end of the special as she decided to leave after it had already been filmed.

Taking to Twitter, one fan wrote: 'Tonight's #GBBO is the last with the wonderful Sandi Toksvig. Thank you, Sandi - the pleasure was truly ours.'

Another added: 'This makes me sad, @sanditoksvig was a bundle of joy and the chemistry between her and Noel [Fielding] was fabulous.

'As Dr Seuss said: "Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened" and Sandi, you made us smile so much' [sic].

One viewer said: 'Sad this is the last @BritishBakeOff with @sanditoksvig it just won't be the same.'

The celebrity special saw Kelly Brook, Judge Rinder, Carol Vorderman and Mo Gilligan taking part for Stand Up To Cancer.

Sandi revealed in January that she was leaving the baking show to focus on other projects.

It was announced in March that former Little Britain star Matt Lucas would take over as host of the show for the next series.

In a statement, Matt said: 'I'm chuffed to bits to be joining the most delicious show on television. I can't wait to break bread with Noel, Prue and Paul and meet the brilliant bakers.

'And bearing in mind my love of cake, I've already ordered some much larger trousers in anticipation. See you in the tent!'

Sandi, also known for hosting quiz shows QI and Fifteen To One, will host a new Channel 4 series called The Write Offs, which looks at the issue of adult literacy.

Sandi is thought to have received £200,000 per series for Bake Off, and claimed in January 2018 that she was the highest paid star on the programme.

She said at the time: 'When stepping down from a job, it is quite common for people to say they are doing so in order to spend more time with their family.

'Unusually, I am departing from the Great British Bake Off so I can spend more time with my other work. As my waistline will testify, Bake Off is an all-consuming show.

'Spending time with Prue, Paul and Noel has been one of the great pleasures of my life. These are friendships which I know will continue beyond the confines of television.

'Bake Off is a wonderful programme which has already proved it can happily withstand a change of hosting personnel.

'The reason for that, of course, is that the true stars of the show are the bakers themselves. I wish everyone well.'

Sandi has fronted the programme alongside co-host Noel and judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith since 2017 after it moved to Channel 4 from BBC One.

They joined the show when previous presenters Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, and judge Mary Berry, quit following the channel move.
