PIERS Morgan has urged fans to back him after sparking nearly 2,000 Ofcom complaints following an explosive debate with care minister Helen Whately on Good Morning Britain.
The television host, 55, was accused of bullying the Conservative MP after clashing on air a week ago.
Taking to Twitter today, Piers wrote: "Apparently nearly 2000 people have now complained to @Ofcom about me grilling Care minister Helen Whateley too 'unfairly' when she couldn't answer even basic questions.
"If you think I should continue grilling ministers in the way I've been doing, please tell @OFCOM. Thanks."
And it appears a number of Piers' followers agreed with his approach.
One responded: "At a time when thousands are dying each week in the UK from Covid-19, we must have journalists holding Gov Ministers to account, particularly when they don't understand their brief or evade and dodge reasonable questions. This @Ofcom is what Piers Morgan is rightly doing."
A second said: "Carry on, your only asking the questions everybody wants answers too."
Another wrote: "There is absolutely nothing that should ever prevent anyone from grilling the Govt over their handling of a global health pandemic. Especially when it's been handled as poorly as it has been. Keeping going @piersmorgan."
TV watchdog Ofcom confirmed to The Sun Online that 1,910 complaints had been lodged over the interview.
It saw Piers accuse the minister of “utter nonsense” over her claims that 19 NHS workers had died on the frontlines, saying that the figure reported in the press is much higher – as official figures have a ten-day lag.
She replied: “I don’t get my data from newspapers, I have to get it from the NHS and our scientists.”
Some viewers complained that Piers was “bullying” her, while others said the presenter was doing his job and holding the minister “to account”.
Following the interview, Ofcom said in a statement: “We are assessing the complaints against our broadcasting rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate.”
