Kate 'had set her heart' on a name for her firstborn child - and was not George - Express

Kate gave birth to Prince George on July 22 2013. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are believed to have kept the sex of their first baby a secret even to themselves as Prince William wanted to be surprised by his child.

However, Kate "suspected" she was going to have a baby boy, and loved the name Alexander, a royal expert said.

Royal commentator Katie Nicholl previously told Vanity Fair: “Courtiers insisted the pair had not found out the sex of their unborn baby, and friends close to the couple claim William wanted a surprise.

“Although Kate apparently suspected it was a boy and had set her heart on the name Alexander, they had not yet decided what to call their firstborn.”

“Kate was reported to have affectionately referred to her bump as ‘our little grape’ while she was pregnant, and there was a flurry of betting on possible names.”

The Cambridges' firstborn was eventually given a name paying tribute to the Queen's late father.

Born with the name Albert, the Queen's father adopted the name King George VI when he ascended to the throne following the abdication of his brother King Edward VIII.

However, Kate and William also managed to give George the name the Duchess reportedly loved.

Prince George's full name is George Alexander Louis.

His third name honours the memory of Lord Louis Mountbatten, Prince Charles's mentor and the influential uncle of Prince Philip, killed by the IRA in August 1979.

Prince George isn't the only little Cambridge to carry more than one name.

His sister Princess Charlotte, born on this day five years ago, holds two more names - Elizabeth and Diana.

While the first pays tribute to the Queen, from whom Charlotte has taken after the love for horses and horse riding, her third name is an homage to the late Princess of Wales.

Similarly, Kate and William's younger son has three name - Prince Louis Arthur Charles.

His first and third name honour respectively Lord Mountbatten and Prince William's father, Prince Charles.

Kate and Prince William are celebrating today the birthday of their only daughter.

The little Cambridge is self-isolating with her siblings and parents at Anmer Hall, the Norfolk house given to Kate and William by the Queen as a wedding gift.

As the Middletons and members of the Royal Family are seeing-put lockdown in their own residences miles away from Norfolk, Charlotte won't be able to receive their birthday wishes in person.

However, according to a source, Kate and Prince William have prepared a Zoom party for the little Cambridge, which will see several members of her extended family, her friends and even the Queen virtually join in to wish her a happy birthday.

Ahead of Charlotte's fifth birthday, Kate and William publicly marked her milestone by publishing four never-before-seen pictures of the little royal on social media.

This morning, they thanked royal fans for their wishes and support by publishing another snap of the little royal.

Two of the five pictures shared are portraits showing Princess Charlotte posing for the camera.

The other three show the Cambridge happily delivering food parcels she helped prepare to the most vulnerable in Sandringham.

In April, Kate and Prince William joined a group of volunteer in Norfolk who delivered as many as 1000 meals to those forced to self-isolate during the coronavirus pandemic.
