May 7, 2017 – Ricky Stenhouse Jr. captured his first career NASCAR Cup Series win in the GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. Stenhouse Jr. got by Kyle Busch on the final lap in overtime and held off the field in the race to the checkered flag to score the win. Ryan Newman’s accident late set up the extra laps and Busch had the top spot heading into overtime. But Stenhouse Jr. got drafting help from Jimmie Johnson and Jamie McMurray to propel into the lead and out race everyone to the finish line. Stenhouse Jr. earned the victory in his 158th career NASCAR Cup start and becomes the 11th first-time winner at Talladega. The win broke Roush Fenway Racing’s 101-race winless streak.

May 7, 2011 – Regan Smith held off Carl Edwards on a green white-checkered finish to win his first career NASCAR Cup Series race in the Showtime Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. A decision to stay out and not pit for tires on a late race caution proved to be the winning move for Smith who was able to outrun Edwards to the finish line for the win. When caution came out with nine laps-to-go the leaders ducked into the pits for fresh tires while Smith stayed out for track position. He took the lead with five laps-to-go and was the leader on the final green-white-checkered restart. Smith crossed the finish line .196 seconds ahead of runner-up Edwards.

May 7, 2010 – Denny Hamlin captured the win in the NASCAR Xfinity (Nationwide) Series Royal Purple 200 to remain undefeated in the three races he’s started from the pole in at Darlington Raceway. After skipping the 2009 event and failing to qualify in 2008, Hamlin backed up his wins from the pole in 2006 and 2007 with another commanding victory. Hamlin led 111 of the 147 laps and held off his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch for his 10th career win. The victory was also the first for crew chief Kevin Kidd since taking over for Dave Rodgers.

May 7, 2005 – Greg Biffle passed Ryan Newman during a green-white-checkered finish to win the first NASCAR Cup Series night race at Darlington Raceway. Biffle’s Ford dominated the Dodge Charger 500 leading 176 laps en route to his third win of the season. Newman looked like he had the car to beat as he jumped ahead of Biffle on lap 324 and had over a two second lead until a caution was brought out by a spinning Mark Martin on Lap 364. Newman opted not to pit and Biffle elected to take on fresh tires. Biffle won the battle off pit road over Jeff Gordon, which ultimately led to his surge at the end.

May 7, 2000 – Jack Sprague settled a season-old score with Gateway International Raceway, steamrollering the opposition to win the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors (Craftsman) Truck Series Ram Tough 200. The defending series champion, winless in six prior starts in 2000, led 145 of the 160 laps around the 1.25-mile speedway. Unchallenged after the 125-lap mark, Sprague’s Chevrolet held a 7.032-second lead over Jimmy Hensley’s Chevrolet at the checkered flag. A year prior, Sprague was similarly dominant, leading four times, but a poor pit stop cost him track position and led to a third-place finish. This time, he was as perfect on pit road as on the race track.

May 7, 1995 – Dale Earnhardt led only two laps of the Save Mart Supermarkets 300 at Sonoma Raceway, but they were the two laps that counted most. Just eight days after celebrating his 44th birthday, "The Intimidator" made a late-race pass of leader Mark Martin to claim his second victory of the season. Martin, who had led 66 of the first 72 laps, was forced to settle for second place on the Northern California road course. He finished .32 seconds behind Earnhardt with Jeff Gordon, pole sitter Ricky Rudd and Terry Labonte completing the top five.

May, 7, 1994 – Derrike Cope captured his only NASCAR Xfinity (Busch) Series win in the New England Chevy Dealers 250 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Cope took the lead when Hermie Sadler, who led 83 laps, ran out of fuel. Bobby Dotter finished second and Sadler wound up 13th.

May 7, 1989 – Davey Allison led 94 of the 188 laps to win the Winston 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. Terry Labonte and Mark Martin, finished second and third, respectively, to give Ford the top three positions. The race marked the first for the new Chevrolet Lumina with Darrell Waltrip the highest finishing Chevrolet driver.

May 7, 1988 – Rick Mast scored his third (of 9) career NASCAR Xfinity Series win in the Pennsylvania 300 at Nazareth Speedway. It marked the first of 17 races for the series at the 1-mile track. Mast led 27 of the 300 laps.

Other winners on this date: 1983 – Darrell Waltrip (Nashville Speedway); 1983 Jack Ingram (Langley Field Speedway); 1977 – Benny Parsons (Nashville Speedway); 1972 – David Pearson (Talladega); 1966 Richard Petty (Langley Field Speedway) 1955 Junior Johnson (Hickory Speedway)
