Travis County and city of Austin health officials reported 5 new coronavirus-related deaths May 5, bringing the total number to 58 since mid-March.

The county also reported its second-consecutive day with 60 new confirmed cases. There have been 1,876 total confirmed cases so far in Travis County, with 579 confirmed recoveries.

Also May 5, Gov. Greg Abbott announced salons and barbershops in the state will be allowed to reopen May 8 followed by gyms, nonessential manufacturers and businesses located in office buildings May 18. Businesses that choose to open will be required to follow social distancing standards.

While local officials said Travis County has successfully dampened the rapid rise of new cases, a large majority of the new cases they are being reported by residents who have had to go to work.
