His Dark Materials premiere receives mixed reaction from viewers - digitalspy.com

The long wait for the BBC and HBO adaptation of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials finally came to an end tonight (November 3), and it's been welcomed by viewers with a mostly positive reaction.

Tonight's premiere began in Jordan College, Oxford, where explorer Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) sought sanctuary for a baby called Lyra. Skip forward into the future and she's now an inquisitive 12-year-old (played by Dafne Keen), running around with her orphan friend Roger.

Later scenes saw Lyra prevent an attempt on Asriel's life, after he returned from the frozen North with the discovery of a city in the sky (hidden in the Northern Lights, no less), causing uproar in the college.

And of course, we were also introduced to the dæmons, the spirit creatures that accompany each human character.

For fans of the books, it seems tonight's premiere went down incredibly well, with many describing it as a faithful adaptation of Pullman's work.

One elated fan tweeted: "Honestly, every single scene made me tear up at how perfect it was. Even just thinking back on it now makes me teary. Couldn’t have asked for more, you little geniuses."

While another wrote: "Been waiting over a decade for a decent adaptation and this might just be it!!"

However, it seems those less familiar with the source material weren't particularly taken by the opening episode, with many being left confused by the 'messy' storyline.

His Dark Materials airs in the UK on Sundays on BBC One at 8pm, and on HBO on Mondays in the US.
