Former Coronation Street star Gray O'Brien opens up about his tonsil cancer diagnosis - digitalspy.com

Former Coronation Street actor Gray O'Brien has revealed he's been diagnosed with stage four tonsil cancer.

The actor, who played villain Tony Gordon in the ITV soap, revealed his diagnosis on Twitter on the last day of his treatment.

"About 3 months ago a trip to the doctors with swollen glands led to stage four tonsil cancer," he wrote.

"Today marks the end of my treatment & I couldn't be more thankful to everyone who has supported me along the way. @Beatson_Charity @CRUK_BI #CancerAwareness #tonsilcancer #staystrong."

Speaking to BBC News later, Gray explained that he has "a long way to go" with his recovery.

"I have been advised it will get worse before it gets better," he continued. "The accuracy of the medical advice I have received with regards to the treatment and how it's progressed has been spot on so far.

"As long as I take it a day at a time as I have up until this point I am looking forward to coming through the other side."

In a follow up post, Gray also shared that he'd been "humbled" by the response to his diagnosis and shared a photo of himself on his first day of treatment.

"I have been totally humbled by the response from my tweet. Although this is the end of my treatment I still have a long way to go in my recovery," he added.

"Best wishes to anyone who is just about to start this journey. This picture was taken on my first day. #CancerAwareness #tonsilcancer."

Gray O'Brien starred on Coronation Street between 2007 and 2010, during which time his character was involved in a romance with Carla Connor (Alison King), which led to him having his love rival Liam Connor (Rob James-Collier) killed.

Tony Gordon later died following an explosion at the factory after he was revealed as Liam's killer and kidnapped Carla.
