Strictly EXCLUSIVE: Bruno Tonioli admits he saved Mike Bushell because he 'covered for Katya Jones' mistake' during dance off... as pro dancer flees the floor in tears

  • The Italian choreographer, 63, pointed the finger at the professional dancer, 30, for messing up a lift in scenes that were cut from Sunday night's results show
  • Katya had fled the dance floor in floods of tears after messing up a lift in her routine with the BBC presenter, 53
  • All four judges voted to save Mike as he and Katya faced Viscountess Emma Weymouth, 33, and her partner Aljaž Skorjanec, 29, in the dance-off
  • A source told MailOnline: 'Katya looked absolutely distraught and ran off crying with her head in her hands'

Bruno Tonioli decided to save Mike Bushell because he 'covered' for a mistake made by his professional partner Katya Jones during the show dance-off.

In scenes that were cut from Sunday night's results episode, the Italian judge, 63, told host Tess Daly, 50, he was putting the BBC presenter, 53, through to next week's show because he carried on after Katya, 30, messed up a lift.

Bruno's comments came after Katya, 30, fled the dance floor in floods of tears after making the mistake when the pair landed in the bottom two alongside Viscountess Emma Weymouth, 33, and her partner Aljaž Skorjanec, 29.

Bruno's full explanation was cut from Sunday's broadcast but those watching live in the studio heard the choreographer say he was impressed Mike had 'covered for the professional's mistake.'

During their dance off performance, a Charleston to Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines, Katya was seen failing to land a tricky lift, with Mike managing to keep hold of his partner and carry on the routine.

Bruno was impressed by Mike's quick-thinking, telling the show during the Judge's vote, which was pre-recorded on Saturday: 'Something extraordinary happened, the celebrity actually covered for the professional's mistake.'

Katya, who suffered a spectacular fall during her previous Movie Week routine was Mike, was seen looking emotional as she said goodbye to Emma and her partner Aljaž Škorjanec after winning the dance off.

A source has told MailOnline that the dancer was then seen fleeing the floor in tears after the cameras stopped rolling.

Viscountess Emma Weymouth became the sixth celebrity to depart the dancefloor after her Samba scoring a disappointing 26 points out of 40 on Saturday night.

They were beaten by Mike and Katya, who scored 30 for their dance, amid viewers' claims he avoided the chop as he works for the broadcasting corporation.

As judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and Bruno Tonoili unanimously decided to send Emma home, the 'heartbroken' star gushed about her stint: 'I’ve loved this more than anything I’ve done in my entire life.'

Media personality Emma was made to perform her skilled routine to Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber’s I Don’t Care, while Mike displayed his fancy Charleston to Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines by Ron Goodwin Orchestra.

Following their dances, the panel delivered their verdicts, with all four judges sending presenter Mike and Russian athlete Katya through to next week's live shows.

Kicking off the feedback, Craig, 54, shared: 'Well, for me the most challenging and the better dance, I thought on this particular performance for me, I’d like to save Mike & Katya.

Oti Mabuse's sister and the latest addition to the panel, Motsi, 38, also chose to save  the pair as she said: 'I’m going to choose a couple which I think everything they did was much clearer to read, much easier to follow and more prepared. I’m going to go with Mike & Katya.'

Bruno, 63, echoed: 'Purely based on tonight’s performance, more entertaining, richer, more powerfulMike & Katya.'

Rounding off the decision, head judge Shirley, 59 said: 'Yes I agreed, I’d have saved Mike & Katya.'

Last week, the BBC series was hit by fix rumours as fans claimed news anchor Mike - who was controversially saved over Catherine Tyldesley last week - was saved by the judges due to his job as a BBC breakfast presenter.

And furious Strictly fans once again took to Twitter on Sunday night to blast the show for keeping Mike despite 'dozens of mistakes'.

One said: 'Astonished by the decision to keep mike Bushell & katana Jones there were dozens of mistakes!!! Rubbish'

Another added: 'Seriously how is mike bushell still in competition surely this is a fix.'

A fan said: 'Fed up with Strictly. Tonight was so unfair. Mike Bushell is useless & he certainly hasn't 'captured hearts'!!'

While another penned: 'Emma Weymouth did the perfect dance off with no mistakes Mike Bushell looks awkward and almost dropped his partner during one of the lifts and yet his the one through utter Madness.'

North Yorkshire native Mike - who has even received vile death threats over winning last week's dance-off - defiantly appeared on BBC Breakfast to defend his position on the show earlier this month.

He said: 'It's an entertainment show, we're all trying our best, you're not really competing against anybody else, you compete against yourself to try and learn to get better and better each week, even if its just learning a couple of new steps.

'As a non-dancer all I can do is put the hours in, do my best and get through it. You have to rise above the abuse on social media, that's one of the sad things about social media.

'All you can do is do your best, accept the judges' decision and move on. Johannes and Catherine are lovely people, I didn't want to see them go but someone has to go.

'It's like football - you have to accept the referee's decision. [The judges] are the best judges in the world, they do know what they're talking about, if they'd sent me home that would have been the best decision, I can't get involved in any of that.

'I just have to concentrate on improving, and if Katya is happy with what I'm doing then I'm happy.'
