James Corden and Ruth Jones have revealed that they were both worried after writing the first draft of the Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special because ‘it just wasn’t good enough’.
The duo, who co-write and star in the hit comedy explained how they had confused themselves while writing it, and Ruth had secretly flown to Jame’s house in Los Angeles to work on the first draft of the script.
The Christmas Special, which airs on Christmas Day will be bringing back all of our favourite characters and TV bosses teased fans with a first look of the trailer on Monday.
James, who plays Smithy has told how there was so much in the story, there was no room for the characters to breathe.
‘We’d written about 40 pages, and we sat and we read it […] and we both went “this just isn’t good enough. It doesn’t feel like the show. It doesn’t feel like it’s right”, he told The Radio Times.

‘There was a real silence in this room […] a sense of maybe we were too naïve to think we could pick it up.’
He continued: ‘We went round and round, and it was probably about midnight – Ruth here with her laptop, me pacing around – and as soon as we had let it go, an idea arrived, maybe the quickest scene we have ever written, really. And as soon as that scene was finished, we had no choice. We said, “well now we have to make it”.’
Gavin and Stacey fans were treated to a first look at the Christmas Special on BBC iPlayer, which revealed Uncle Bryn (Rob Brydon) in full-on meltdown mode right at the end of season three’s final episode.
With a million dishes on the go and a tight schedule that no one’s sticking to, Bryn, who’s never exactly been one to handle the pressure of any situation, is running ragged around the kitchen.
He’s even got a walky-talky for this kind of military operation because a phone is not efficient enough clearly.

Calling in for back-up from Gwen, Jason or basically anyone at this point, Bryn is getting more panicked as the big dinner prep gets on top of him.
With the plates still at Stacey’s, the table still not set, and a large number of pots getting to literal boiling point on the stove, it’s only a matter of time until Bryn steams up too.
Hearing an almighty crash, Stacey (who was actually setting the table so he was panicking over nothing) and Nessa run into the kitchen to find her kind-hearted uncle on the floor over a smashed plate.
So despite the show creators being concerned about the Christmas Special, fans needn’t worry because we have a feeling as Ness would say it’ll be ‘alrighhhht’.
Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special airs Christmas Day on BBC One.
