Emily, who was saved by medics, said she had “spiralled” out of control. She recalled: “I’d do drastic things to make him get back with me. I drank a bottle of vodka and cut my wrists — a cry for help, a cry for attention.

“I was spiralling. I was too young to cope with my breaking heart and cloudy drunk head. I woke up with massive bandages on my wrists and had to hide them from my family.

“I’ll never forgive myself for harming my body in that way. I didn’t want to die. I just felt so out of control of everything and it was almost like a f*** you to everyone. A rebellion, I guess. I saw it like I had no other choice.”

Emily’s mum Kate Robbins, 61, herself an actress, singer and comedian, was horrified, the star said.

She told the Sunday People: “My mum would beg me to open up and speak to her but I just couldn’t. She started to see cuts on my arms and it broke her heart.”

Emily managed to turn her life around, launching an acting career that led her to a breakthrough role as sixth-former Charlotte Hinchcliffe in cult E4 comedy The Inbetweeners. Appearances followed on shows such as Dancing On Ice and Celebrity Juice, before her Celeb jungle stint made her a household name.

Emily, who won the hearts of the nation on last year’s I’m A Celeb, has released a book on her life: Are We There Yet?: To Indignity . . . And Beyond!

YOU'RE NOT ALONE

It doesn't discriminate, touching the lives of people in every corner of society - from the homeless and unemployed to builders and doctors, reality stars and footballers.

It's the biggest killer of people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car crashes.

And men are three times more likely to take their own life than women.

Yet it's rarely spoken of, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage unless we all stop and take notice, now.

That is why The Sun launched the You're Not Alone campaign.

The aim is that by sharing practical advice, raising awareness and breaking down the barriers people face when talking about their mental health, we can all do our bit to help save lives.

Let's all vow to ask for help when we need it, and listen out for others... You're Not Alone.

If you, or anyone you know, needs help dealing with mental health problems, the following organisations provide support:
