Olivia Newton-John’s iconic ‘bad Sandy’ outfit from Grease has raised over £300,000 for her cancer charity after going up for auction.

The actor, 71, put a selection of her belongings up for sale to raise money for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre, including this famous outfit.

Despite the trousers having an estimate of between $40,000 – $60,000 (£31,000 – £46,000), they actually sold for $162,500 (£126,000), and the jacket beat its $100,000 – $200,000 (£77,000 – £155,000) estimate to sell for $243,200 (£188,000).

The combined total of the two items raked in £314,000, and given that she put around 500 items into the auction, Olivia definitely made a massive profit for her charity.

The leather jacket and trousers were worn in the 1978 film Grease, and the anonymous buyer of the jacket told Darren Julien of Julien’s Auctions: ‘I’m proud to be the owner of this incredible piece of pop culture history.’

Olivia was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992 and revealed in November 2018 that she was once again battling cancer, and has campaigned for health awareness ever since, even setting up the cancer research centre in her home town of Melbourne.

The tight-fitting pants, which became synonymous with the character of Sandy, were already vintage (and not in the best of states) when Olivia wore them in Grease.

She revealed in her memoir, Don’t Stop Believin’: ‘Albert Wolsky [Grease costume designer] didn’t disappoint. He found these body-hugging, high-waist, skin-tight, black sharkskin pants (even better than leather!) that were actually from the 1950s.

‘They were so old, and there was just one pair, so there was no room for error. One rip and disaster.

‘When I tried on those pants for the first time, the zipper was broken and Albert didn’t want to rip them trying to put in a new one or remove the old one. Instead, I’d be sewn into them each morning!

‘My first thought after hearing this complex fashion fix: What if I need to pee? What am I going to do?’

This is the first time a fan has been able to own the outfit, as Olivia has kept hold of it for 40 years.
