The Friends theme song could have been R.E.M.'s Shiny Happy People, according to the band.
Speaking to NME, the band's frontman Michael Stipe claims they were approached to cover the track for the iconic US sitcom - which first aired in 1994 - but declined.
His bandmate Mike Mills added: "Apparently they were thinking about using Shiny Happy People as the theme song, which I just recently heard about, but apparently that's the case".
Stipe recalled: "Then they went to another band and said, 'Can you write an R.E.M. song?' and they did.
"That's what I've heard. I don't want to diss the other band. I don't remember who they are, but that's a good song."
Fellow Americans The Rembrandts went on to record I'll Be There For You especially for the show, with the lyrics co-written by its producers David Crane and Marta Kauffman.
The song was only apparently intended to be a minute long, but it was later extended and released as a single in 1995.
It topped the US charts and reached number three in the UK.
Friends, starring Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer and Lisa Kudrow, is one of the most popular TV series of all time.
The show, set in New York, was nominated for 62 Emmy awards during its 10 seasons - it won six, including outstanding actress prizes for Jennifer Aniston and Lisa Kudrow.
In September, it celebrated its 25th anniversary with a series of events worldwide, including finally making it onto the big screen - but not in the way fans wanted!
Some of the best episodes, as well as exclusive interviews and previously unseen content, were screened in UK cinemas.
The actors are constantly asked if there will be a movie, but that's been all but ruled out, with producers of the show quoted as saying that would never happen.
All the cast went on to enjoy huge success after Friends, with Jennifer Aniston arguably the biggest star - recently breaking the internet after joining Instagram.
She received eight million likes in less than 24 hours and gained more than 1.5m followers after posting a selfie with her former Friends co-stars.
Aniston is also busy promoting her new series, The Morning Show, co-starring Reese Witherspoon on Apple TV, which launched on Friday.
Both have been speaking to Sky News' Kay Burley to discuss what it takes to be a morning show presenter.
Watch the full interview with Kay on Monday on Sky News.
