Birds Of Prey Grounded At The US Box Office - Empire

Though it was greeted with plenty of critical praise, Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) proved to be a disappointment at the US box office this weekend. Though it opened at the top of the charts, its $33.3 million start was well below expectations and represents the worst kickoff for a DECU movie.

It's a result that is unlikely to put a grin on either Harley Quinn's face or the accountants at Warner Bros., the studio's hopes for a new franchise endangered if not dashed. Internationally, the film has made $81.2 million.

With the arrival of the Birds, there were no other wide releases, so the rest of the chart is simply holdovers either staying in place or shuffling slightly. Bad Boys For Life was pushed to second, where it made $12 million after four weeks on release. 1917 nabbed $9 million in third, with $132.5 million in the bank domestically so far. In fourth, we find Dolittle on $6.6 million, while Jumanji: The Next Level stayed fifth, earning $5.5 million.

The Gentlemen also held on, sticking in sixth with $4.1 million, as Gretel & Hansel slipped to seventh on $3.5 million. Knives Out, possibly spurred by awards recognition, jumped back to eighth place and $2.35 million. Little Women fell to ninth on $2.32 million, ahead of Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, which dropped to 10th and $2.2 million.
