Mission: Impossible 7 filming hit by coronavirus fears - Sky News

Filming on the latest Mission: Impossible movie has been suspended due to coronavirus fears in Italy.

Paramount Pictures had scheduled three weeks of filming in Venice but said it was cancelling the shoot out of "an abundance of caution for the safety and well-being of our cast and crew".

The studio added: "During this hiatus we want to be mindful of the concerns of the crew and are allowing them to return home until production starts. We will continue to monitor this situation, and work alongside health and government officials as it evolves."

More than 200 people in Italy have been infected with COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by coronavirus, the largest number outside Asia. Seven people have died.

Most of the cases are in the neighbouring Lombardy region but three of them are in Venice and the Venetian government has halted public gatherings in an effort to stop the spread.

The film was due for release in July next year but it is not known whether the pause in filming will alter that date.

It is understood Hollywood star Tom Cruise, 57, was not in Italy for filming.

The action film is not the only movie affected by the virus, which has seen travel restrictions and business closures in affected regions.

Paramount postponed the release in China of Sonic The Hedgehog, which had been scheduled for Friday. Cinemas in China, the world's second-largest box office, have been closed due to the outbreak.

Last week, the latest James Bond film No Time To Die cancelled its Beijing premiere and promotional tour.

Disney's remake of Mulan could be forced to go the same way, with restrictions in China unlikely to have eased before its release date next month.

More than 80,000 people worldwide have been infected with COVID-19, with around 2,700 dying.
