Britain’s Got Talent’s auditions in Manchester descended into horror on Monday when a magic trick went wrong and left a panicked Simon Cowell almost pulling the plug.
The complicated illusion saw all four judges – Simon, David Walliams, Alesha Dixon and Amanda Holden – given instruments and keys by an assistant as an escapologist was submerged in water.
During the course of the act the keys would be eliminated, with one being what sets the chained performer free.
However, in an almost fatal error, David wasn’t later asked for his allen key as the assistant returned to the stage – the key which would ultimately release the performer.
As a result, it was left on the judges table while it was needed on the stage, and added vital time to the act who couldn’t breathe as he was handcuffed.

Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk, a source told us: ‘It was horrible. David looked absolutely mortified as Simon started trying to signal producers to stop production and a medic was called in.’
‘It looked like it was part of the act to begin with, but it soon dawned on everyone that it wasn’t,’ they added. ‘That this was a real problem that threatened their safety.
‘Thankfully they were able to correct themselves but there was a real moment where we thought it could end in disaster and it was clear everyone was beginning to panic.’
This year’s auditions for the much-loved talent show has definitely been keeping the four judges on their toes, with increasingly bizarre acts trying their luck to impress them.
A Ariana Grande-loving, Voldemort drag queen viral sensation has performed in front of the audience, as well as a penis painter named Pricasso.
(He paints people using his penis… he doesn’t use the male anatomy as a canvas, just as an FYI.)

Whoever wins the competition will knock Colin Thackery from his reign as current champion, after he stole hearts and the win with his songs dedicated to the memory of his late wife, Joan.
The 90-year-old got to live out his dream by performing for the Queen in his Chelsea Pensioner’s uniform at last year’s Royal Variety Performance.
Britain’s Got Talent airs later this year on ITV.
