The stars brought out the big guns – well, the big diamonds anyway – for the Oscars 2020. For the crowning moment of awards season, necklaces once again ruled the red carpet. Best Actress nominee Charlize Theron wore one from Tiffany & Co featuring a 20-plus carat marquise diamond that contrasted with lines of square-cut diamonds.

Greta Gerwig was one of the few to wear coloured gems alongside her diamonds. Her Bulgari necklace featured eight emerald beads surrounded by pear, round and pavé diamonds.

Brooches also had a moment. Saoirse Ronan wore one from Gucci’s high jewellery collection in her hair, Margot Robbie’s vintage Chanel couture centred on a pearl and diamond brooch, and Taika Waititi (in Nikos Koulis) and Elton John (in Theo Fennell) both picked up Oscars with brooches pinned to their lapels.
