On Boxing Day, the 58-year-old had taken to twitter to criticise a group of foxhunting supporters who had been filmed repeatedly slamming the corpse of a fox into the car of some anti-hunt campaigners.

"If there is anyone in the U.K. left with any ambiguous ideas about whether we should end Foxhunting immediately then watch this," he wrote.

He had also criticised prominent lawyer Jolyon Maugham QC, who caused a stir the same day after tweeting that he had just killed a fox with a baseball bat.

Taking to twitter again today, the BBC Springwatch presenter wrote: "It appears that if you oppose the cruelty and illegality of fox hunting and those who club them to death you don’t just get social media abuse."

The tweet was accompanied by a video of clip of Packham outside his home standing over the body of a male fox that he said appeared to have been killed in a snare.

'IT'S ILLEGAL, BUT IT CARRIES ON'

Packham said the animal was a "beautiful, beautiful fox" in the "prime of its life".

"Wouldn't it be good if we could just stop this foxhunting once and for all," he said.

"It is illegal but it still carries on, and when you campaign against it, unpleasant things like this happen.

"Surely it's time to... move on to a more civilised society."

He added he had CCTV at his property and that the police had been informed.

Fox hunting has been illegal in England and Wales since the Hunting Act of 2004, which banned the hunting of wild mammals like foxes, deer, and hares with dogs.

The Act came into force in February 2005, but many hunts, including traditional Boxing Day events, continue across the country.

Hunts often see clashes between fox hunters and anti-animal cruelty campaigners seeking to sabotage the events.

Earlier this year, Packham received death threats as well as human excrement in the post and two dead crows hung from his gate after campaigning successfully to change laws governing the shooting of birds.
