New Year's Honours list features GBBO winner Nadiya, Peaky Blinders boss and more - digitalspy.com

Not much seems to happen in the gap between Boxing Day and New Year's Eve, except for maybe the annual traditions of The Big Fat Quiz of the Year on Channel 4, and the Queen's Honours List being revealed.

Over 1,000 people have received some sort of award this year, for services to good causes like charities or for outstanding contributions to society.

The hierarchy goes: Companion of Honour, a Knight/Damehood, CBE (Commander of the Order of British Empire), OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) and then MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire), and there are also British Empire Medals handed out too.

Some of the most famous faces to receive New Year's Honours this time around include the Cambridge-born star of Grease and cancer awareness activist Olivia Newton-John, who has been made a Dame.

12 Years a Slave director Steve McQueen has been knighted, as has Skyfall director Sam Mendes, while children's TV favourite Floella Benjamin is now a Dame too, having already become a Baroness in 2010.

On the music side, Sir Elton John has been made a Companion of Honour, while Queen's Roger Taylor and Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody are now OBEs, and Billy Ocean has become an MBE.

"I'm humbled and honoured to be among such highly esteemed company in receiving the Companion of Honour," Sir Elton tweeted. "2019 has turned out to be a truly wonderful year for me and I feel extraordinarily blessed."

The Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain and legendary TV chef Ainsley Harriott are now both MBEs, while Olympian and Celebs Go Dating survivor Jade Jones has received an OBE too.

Meanwhile, Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has been made a CBE, as has veteran BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Nightingale. Other famous faces in the Honours list include Gabby Logan (MBE), June Sarpong (OBE), Nigel Slater (OBE) and footballer Jill Scott (MBE).

Some interesting facts about this year's list: 51% of this year's recipients are women, 9.1% are BAME (Black, Asian, Middle-Eastern) and 3.3% are openly LGBTQ+.
