One fan shared an image showing Laura Aikman and Russell Tovey - who star as Smithy's new girlfriend Sonia and his best pal Budgie, respectively - locking lips, leading to confusion as to the direction of their characters.

Viewers took to Twitter in their droves to beg for a follow-up series after praising the one-off festive special, which was watched by an average of 11.6 million viewers, making it the biggest festive special since Christmas Day 2008.
