Rick and Morty just trolled its fans again with the talking cat in 'Claw and Hoarder: Special Ricktim's Morty' - digitalspy.com

Note: This article contains spoilers for episode four of Rick and Morty season four.

Rick and Morty have faced some truly horrifying things over the years, including their own deaths and whatever the hell a 'plumbus' is. However, none of that (presumably) compares to what Rick saw in the mind of a talking cat at the end of 'Claw and Hoarder: Special Ricktim’s Morty'.

While the bizarre "Slut Dragon" saga dominated most of this episode's runtime, Jerry also went on his own side adventure with the aforementioned cat prior to this confrontation.

Upon meeting the adorable little feline (voiced by Matthew Broderick), Jerry immediately asked him how he can talk. Seems only fair. Unfortunately, the cat didn't agree, and instead of answering the question, he asked Jerry two of his own: To be taken to Florida and for Jerry to stop asking him how he can talk.

Later on, other characters kept asking the cat this same question, and every time they did, he kept changing the subject in increasingly shifty ways.

As you might expect, Rick was having none of it, so he used some tech to read the cat's mind. Whatever was hidden away in there immediately caused Jerry to throw up and Rick almost killed himself trying to cope with what he'd just seen.

While Jerry has always been a 'weaker' character, Rick is the kind of guy who can bury his grandson's corpse without batting an eyelid, so that cat must have had some seriously messed up stuff going on to freak Rick out like that.

Unfortunately, viewers weren't given a glimpse into the cat's brain, aside from some horrifying war-like noises which played in the background while Rick scanned its mind.

Right after the episode aired, fans leaped online to try and figure out what in the name of squanch was going on. A quick scan of Reddit immediately throws up a number of possible yet quite frankly insane theories, including, but not limited to;

  • The talking cat is actually a Morty.
  • It's a reference to that horrific Garfield meme ‘I’m Sorry Jon’.
  • The cat was a victim of senseless violence.
  • The cat is a cosmic entity of unspeakable evil.

That last theory sounds particularly appealing given how it could connect with the Lovecraftian monster from the show's opening credits. However, it seems far more likely that we'll never find out what the cat's secret is — and that's the whole point.

After all, there's a reason why it kept saying, "Don’t ask questions. Just have fun." Fans and critics alike — including us — have a habit of searching for hidden meanings, even when they're not intended, and this threatens to suck the joy out of these mysteries by over-complicating them.

In this instance, it's hard not to see the Talking Cat as a mouthpiece for Rick and Morty creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland. Back in the season four premiere, they directly trolled toxic fans through the words of Fascist Morty, and now it seems they've taken aim at the Reddit obsessives who analyse their show.

This wouldn't be the first time that Harmon and Roiland have encouraged fans to stop taking Rick and Morty so seriously either.

Back when season three aired in 2017, Harmon told Inverse that "the showrunner and the fan are at cross purposes. Decoding and theorizing, that’s a fan at their best and highest form when they’re thinking about the show on a level that the showrunner at peak form just isn’t".

"You want people to feel that affection for a show, but you don’t actually want all your answers determined at the beginning of some conference, six years before they’re important to the plot."

Remember that bizarre corn planet from 'The Wedding Squanchers' in season two? The reason why this was so horrifying is that the show deliberately avoids explaining why Rick is actually so scared. Still, that didn't stop fans from theorising about what this could all mean.

Roiland expanded on that idea further during the same interview, revealing that the writing team don't always have the answers themselves:

"We honestly haven’t thought that deeply about certain theories. I also tend to avoid diving into stuff on Reddit. I’m on Reddit a lot, but I look at dumb stuff and just skip past the deep fan theories. It’s bad to have that stuff sticking around my subconscious."

Of course, we're well aware that this very article has done exactly what the Talking Cat warned us against doing. By questioning what Rick and Jerry saw in his mind, we're trying to find deeper meaning in the idea that we should stop looking for deeper meanings.

In a show that loves to mess with our minds, this might be the biggest headf**k of all.

Rick and Morty season 4 airs Sundays on Adult Swim in the US, and airs in the UK on E4 and All 4 on Wednesdays.
