Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ending explained - digitalspy.com

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker wasn't quite as long as another saga-ending film, (Avengers: Endgame, duh), but still had quite a lot to accomplish. Given the breadth of the Star Wars universe and the myriad characters, director JJ Abrams had a daunting task ahead of him.

We would forgive you if you came away from The Rise of Skywalker slightly confused – there were plenty of questions that went unanswered.

Now we're here to tackle just what the ending of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker meant, and how it ties into the mystery of the title. Obviously, there will be big spoilers for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker from here.

A big portion of The Rise of Skywalker followed the cast as they went from MacGuffin to MacGuffin, planet to planet in search of Emperor Palpatine. Because, as Poe Dameron deadpans: somehow he's back.

As the merry band of resistance fighters work their way through the galaxy, Rey and Kylo Ren play their continuing game of cat and mouse, their force connection growing even stronger.

Rey, Finn, Poe, C3PO, BB-8 and newcomer D-O wind up on Kef Bir, led by MacGuffin 1 (a Sith blade) to MacGuffin 2 (Sith Wayfinder). Rey braves the tidal waves to get to the wreckage where she is confronted by Kylo Ren.

An epic battle ensues. Feeling that Rey is losing, Leia reaches out through the force to call her son's name. Ben is distracted long enough for Rey to fatally wound him.

The effort kills Leia, but meanwhile, Rey uses her newfound Force power (already established in The Mandalorian) to heal Ben. She leaves for Exegol. On the precipice of redemption, Ben is visited by a memory of his father Han Solo, who forgives him. Ben is redeemed and speeds off to help Rey.

On Exegol, Rey confronts Palpatine – who is revealed to be her grandfather. He says that if she kills him, all the Sith will flow into her and she'll become Empress Palpatine. Ben is stopped by the Knights of Ren, but Rey uses their Force connection to pass him a lightsaber.

He defeats the Knights of Ren to join Rey but Palpatine uses their (newly introduced) 'dyad in the Force' power to restore himself, essentially sucking the life out of them. He then tosses Ben down a reactor shaft.

Rey stares up at the sky as Palpatine fires Force lightning into the Resistance ships, causing them to malfunction and plummet. At her lowest ebb, Rey calls on all the Jedi and is filled with their voices. She then stands, and as Palpatine fires force lightning at her to kill her, she defends herself and reflects his power on to him, which kills him.

The effort kills her. However, Ben Solo survived the fall down the shaft (which Palpatine, of all people, should have seen coming) and uses his Force to bring her back to life. She wakes up and for a moment, there seems to be peace. And then they kiss (womp womp) and Ben, having used all his life Force to resurrect Rey, dies.

The Resistance defeats the last of Palpatine's army. They all celebrate. An indeterminate amount of time later, Rey and BB-8 head to Tatooine, where Rey visits Luke's home.

She buries Luke and Leia's lightsabers in the sand before revealing a new one she's made for herself – yellow in colour (which keen-eyed fans will know is the colour of Jedi Sentinels).

Suddenly, a local appears and asks who she is. Rey looks back to see the Force ghosts of Luke and Leia. She turns to the local and replies: "Rey Skywalker." Rey and BB-8 together head off into the distance as the twin suns of Tatooine set on the horizon.

PHEW.

The significance of the final scene is huge, especially when you take into account the name of the movie. The Rise of Skywalker doesn't refer to a new class of Jedi, but instead to Rey herself. By opting to take on the name of Skywalker, she sets her own legacy.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is out now in the UK and US.
