Prince William will be made Her Majesty’s Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland this year.” Daily Express royal correspondent Richard Palmer said it was largely an “honorary appointment” but with important undertones. He said on Twitter: “An honorary appointment but further preparations for a future King: the Queen has approved the appointment of the Duke of Cambridge as Her Majesty’s Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 2020.”
Kensington Palace took to Twitter to share the news.
The Palace said: “The Queen has appointed Prince William as Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the @churchscotland this year.”
Each year, The Queen appoints a Lord High Commissioner to represent the Sovereign at the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.
Monarchs have sworn to maintain the Church of Scotland since the sixteenth century.
The duty to "preserve the settlement of the true Protestant religion as established by the laws made in Scotland" was affirmed in the 1707 Act of Union between England and Scotland.
The Queen made this pledge at the first Privy Council meeting of her reign in February 1952.

Charles is the longest-serving heir apparent in British history.
He became first-in-line to the throne in 1952 at the age of just three and he was nine when he was given the Prince of Wales title.
The Queen’s former press secretary Dickie Arbiter warned skipping a generation sets a “dangerous precedent”.
He said: “Skipping a generation sets a dangerous precedent and could lead to calls for Prince George, who would be in his late sixties or seventies by the time his father’s reign came to an end, to step aside for his heir, be it a son or a daughter.
“The saying ‘if it ain’t broke why fix it?’ must apply to succession.
“William’s turn will come. Meanwhile, Charles will succeed his mother, the Queen, and if the past couple of decades are anything to go by, the monarchy will be in safe hands.”
