Note: Wibbly-wobbly spoiler warning for Doctor Who season 12 episode five.
Ever since The Master was revealed to be Sacha Dhawan's character in Spyfall, Doctor Who has become a hive of unexpected twists and turns in season twelve.
'Fugitive of the Judoon' took this to new extremes when it revealed not one but two game-changing twists that bowled over Whovians and casual fans alike.
In a normal week, the surprise return of Jack Harkness would have been the talk of the TARDIS, but it turned out that this was just another misdirect, which led to the biggest revelation of all – the history-making arrival of a new Doctor called Ruth.
While Jo Martin's character is still shrouded in mystery, what we do know is that the first black Doctor has changed everything we thought we knew about Doctor Who moving forward.
It's easy to suggest that no one could have seen this coming, but in hindsight, that's not exactly true. Upon rewatching 'Fugitive of the Judoon', it turns out there were actually a few clues planted in the episode beforehand which signposted the new Doctor's arrival.
From the moment we first met Ruth, her unwavering focus on the time of her wristwatch represented a clear link to her secret identity as a Time Lord.
Of course, that would have been near impossible to pick up on first viewing, but more of us should have probably twigged something was up when Commander Gat referred to Ruth's partner as her "companion".
While that could have simply referenced their marriage, it turns out that Lee Clayton was actually Ruth's companion in the more literal sense of the word, much like Graham, Yaz and Ryan are "companions" to the Thirteenth Doctor too.
Jodie Whittaker's Doctor says at one point that "time is swirling" all around her, and so too are the coincidences which symbolise Ruth's emergence as a Time Lord.
A number of blue and hexagonal shapes in her flat bear more than just a passing resemblance to the Doctor's signature TARDIS design, but the biggest clue of all arrives much later in the episode, just moments before Ruth's true identity is revealed.
When she and the Doctor arrive at the lighthouse, Ruth is drawn to a fire alarm which we discover contains her Time Lord essence. Viewers are only provided with a brief glimpse of it before all the chaos ensues, but as you can see in the following screenshot, this isn't just any ordinary alarm.
Upon closer inspection, what appears to be Gallifreyan symbols can be spotted around the fire alarm's casing, hinting at its alien origins. Although this was our biggest clue yet regarding Ruth's identity, it came right before the big reveal, so it was also an easy one to miss.
Now that the truth's out there, Whovians have a whole new bunch of mysteries to solve moving forward, including who the Timeless Child really is and how the Lone Cyberman figures into all this.
Unfortunately, without our own TARDIS to hand, it's impossible to solve everything and confirm Ruth's true origins just yet. What we can tell you though is that this is the best Doctor Who has been in a long time, reminding fans why they love the show so much in the first place.
Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US.
