SANDI Toksvig quit The Great British Bake Off yesterday — with insiders saying she had been unhappy and “desperate to leave for ages”.

A source said co-host Sandi, 61, often hid in her dressing room — sparking tensions on the set of the Channel 4 show.

They added: “The only surprise is that she didn’t walk sooner.”

Noel Fielding paid a gushing Rolling Stones tribute to Sandi Toksvig as her unhappiness behind the scenes was revealed.

Noel said he felt “like Mick without a Keef” after his co-host of three years announced she was quitting the popular Channel 4 show. But insiders told The Sun it wasn’t so matey during the last series as a fed-up Sandi grumbled and hid herself away, knitting.

He said: “I feel like Tom without Jerry! Mick without a Keef.”

In the message, in full below, he says double acts are a rare and magical beast and tells Sandi “working with you was a pleasure”.

Insiders claimed the Denmark-born presenter and comic had been “desperate to leave for ages”.

One source said: “The atmosphere on set had been lively and upbeat, but as time went on Sandi seemed to be enjoying it less and less and just didn’t want to get involved.

“She spent most of her time hiding out in what looked like a bijou shepherd’s hut she’d had set up, knitting on her own — and quite often grumbling about it all.

“As time went on it sparked some real tensions and everybody felt uncomfortable.

“By the end of the last series it was obvious she wanted out as soon as possible.”

Insiders say she also began to complain about the conditions on set, including the hotel provided by production bosses and the levels of comfort between shoots.

A source added: “The only surprise is she didn’t walk sooner. This has been on the cards for ages.”

Writing in her autobiography last year,  Sandi, 61, admitted she had always found it “odd” that bosses paired her with off-the-wall comic Noel, 46.

Sandi said she was leaving to “spend more time with my other work” and insisted she will remain close friends with Noel and judges  Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.

She added: “Bake Off is a wonderful programme which has already proved it can happily withstand a change of hosting personnel. The reason for that, of course, is that the true stars of the show are the bakers themselves. I wish everyone well.”

Paul, 53, posted a photo of the four stars online, writing: “I will miss Sandi, she has done an amazing job in the tent, much loved by all who met her.”

Prue, 79, added: “I have absolutely loved working with Sandi, she’s been a brilliant host and enormous fun.”

Bosses are seeking a replacement for Sandi,  who will be seen on the forthcoming Stand Up To Cancer celebrity specials, which air in the spring.
