Note: This article contains major spoilers from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
It turns out that Nien Nunb may have survived Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker after all, if the actor who portrayed him is to be believed.
The beloved character first appeared back in Return of the Jedi as the Rebels took down the Empire, and resurfaced in the new trilogy as he helped the Resistance.
However, earlier this week The Rise of Skywalker: Expanded Edition writer Rae Carson confirmed that Nunb perished off-screen during the Battle of Exegol in the latest movie.
Yet the actor who portrays the character, Mike Quinn, reckons that isn't the case, apparently writing in a Facebook comment (via @DaemoeWolf): "Yes he survived. They would have shown the ship exploding. You see the Tantive IV coming into land at the end as they are celebrating."
He elaborated in a separate comment (via @501stBobbyLinn): "When someone dies - you see the ship explode right? The Tantive IV didn't explode but is seen landing above the trees when others are celebrating.
"The reason he's not seen celebrating with the other guys is that it was filmed out of order (those scenes were filmed barely half way through the shoot). The script evolved as we went along and little things changed. So Nien did actually finally officially survive."
Carson has since responded to the apparent twist in the tale, tweeting: "If it turns out that he lives, we will all celebrate!"
However, fellow writer Bryan Young – who Carson interacted with in her initial tweets about Nunb's apparent death – doesn't reckon Quinn is correct, saying he had it "confirmed from multiple sources" that the character is no more.
We guess we'll now need confirmation from director JJ Abrams on this one.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is out now.
