Sum 41 cancel gig after 'an explosive device was detonated outside of the venue' hours before their Paris show

Rock band Sum 41 have cancelled their intimate gig in Paris after an 'explosive device was detonated just outside of the venue door.'

The Canadian musicians, who are currently on an European tour, were due to perform at venue Le Etoiles in the French city on Saturday night.

Ahead of the show, they explained on Twitter that there weren't any injuries but couldn't 'guarantee the safety of the fans' so had to cancel their appearance.

Writing in a now deleted tweet, they said: 'During load in for tonight's performance in Paris, an explosive device was detonated just outside of the venue door. 

Band, crew, the fans in line are all safe, there were no injuries. Due to the intimate nature of our 'Personal Space' performances, we are unable to guarantee the safety of the fans in attendance.

'We are deeply saddened to announce that tonight's show has been canceled. More information to follow.'

When asked about the 'explosion', venue Les Etoiles exclusively told MailOnline: 'There were firecrackers in the street during the strikes. Absolutely no other problems. The group didn't want to take any risks.'

However a shorter version of Sum 41's tweet, announcing the cancellation of the gig but not explaining why, was later posted.  

Fans took to social media to express their sadness at the concert's cancellation, but also say they were glad nobody was harmed. 

One wrote 'hope you are alright' and another agreed adding 'very glad you are all uninjured'.

Sum 41 was formed in 1996 under the name Kaspir and included members Deryck Whiblet Dave Baksh Tom Thacker and Jason 'Cone' McCaslin.

Since then the rockers have released hit tracks including In Too Deep, Fat Lip and Pieces.

The band are next expected to perform on Monday in London before heading onto Amsterdam and Dusseldorf.  

MailOnline has contacted the band and Préfecture de Police for comment.
