Mel C has spoken of her past struggle with eating disorders and depression after she was nearly booted out of the Spice Girls following a "scuffle" with Victoria Beckham.
The singer known as Sporty Spice, whose full name is Melanie Chisholm, revealed last year that she was almost kicked out of the famous girl group months before it officially launched in 1996.
She told the Guardian at the time that she was threatened with the sack after getting "lairy" and telling bandmate Beckham to "f*** off" at the Brit Awards.
Appearing on Desert Island Discs on Sunday, Chisholm said she was "hurt and embarrassed" about the incident and became "really hard" on herself.
She told the BBC Radio 4 show: "We'd all had a few bevvies and on the way out there was a little scuffle between myself and Victoria.
"I was told if that behaviour ever happened again, then I would be out."
She added: "I began to be really, really hard on myself.
"I think that is where the start of some of my problems came because I had to be very, very strict with myself.
"I couldn't allow myself to relax because if I did I might mess it all up."
Chisholm, 46, broke down in tears as she told host Lauren Laverne how she became depressed and developed an eating disorder during her time in the Spice Girls.
"I went from being anorexic to having a binge eating disorder," she said.
"I went to my GP and I was diagnosed with depression. It was such a weight lifted off my shoulders.
"It was such a relief because I thought, 'Oh my God, there's a name for it and I can be helped'."
Meanwhile, Chisholm said the departure of Geri Horner, known as Ginger Spice, from the Spice Girls in 1998 left them "absolutely devastated".
She added: "We really thought she would come back. But for reasons - her own reasons - she had to go. That was the time she had to go.
"I completely respect that now but at the time it was really difficult. And in all honesty, (it was) the beginning of the end for the Spice Girls."
Chisholm was in a 10-year relationship with property developer Thomas Starr until 2012 and they have a daughter called Scarlett, who was born in 2009.
The singer said becoming a mother had "changed" her and gave her the strength to leave her ex-partner.
"She has made me braver," Chisholm said. "She has made me stand up for myself more.
"I make big decisions. Leaving her dad was hard but I wasn't happy and she wasn't happy, and it wasn't the environment I wanted my child to grow up in.
"I couldn't have done that without the strength that I got from her."
