Phillip Schofield probed a This Morning caller about coming out in an unearthed 2017 interview, before he announced he was gay three years later. 

On Friday, the TV host, 57, took to Instagram and appeared on the magazine show to confirm he was gay, in news that shocked the nation, as he suffered 'inner conflict' and is now ready to 'celebrate and be proud' of his sexuality.

The 2017 interview saw Phillip and his co-star Holly Willoughby speaking to viewers about what they would tell their younger selves, during which one caller named Nik engaged Phil in a poignant discussion about coming out.

Last week, Phillip, who shares daughters Molly, 27, and Ruby, 24, with his wife Stephanie, spoke on This Morning about his battles with keeping his secret and the relief of coming out - something reflected in his interview. 

As the TV stars asked the caller what she would do, she responded: 'I would tell my 18-year-old self it's okay to be you. I knew at 18 I was gay...

'I was so ashamed of it I cant tell you how ashamed I was and I went on to get married and have children and it took till I was 37 to realise who I really was'.

Holly asked: 'What happened to your life then?', before the caller responded: 'I left my husband and it was all very amicable and I met a woman and we're going to celebrate four years of marriage in March. I've never been happier.'

Deep in thought, Phillip asked: 'What about family reaction, how did your family react?', to which the caller said: 'Really well. I was worried...

'And I don't know why because my mum and dad were very cool when I finally came out they were so happy because they always knew there was something wrong... 

'What was amazing about it, my mum died about a year and a half after i met her she knew I was happy.'

Phillip's best friend Holly said: 'While you cant go back and speak to your 18-year-old self but there will be a lot of people just embarking on this journey now  or feeling similar feelings what would you say to them?'

Pained: Phillip then pushed: 'Not all families are like yours though, some families do care, you have to be careful how you do something like this'

Open and honest: Appearing on This Morning, Phil said he was 'naive' to think he could suppress his sexuality when got married, and he didn't consider his sexuality as it was such a 'joyous time' for him

Nik went on: 'I would just say nobody cares! I had this feeling that everyone would care and nobody would like me but nobody cares. if people care for you they just care for you they don't care who you go out with or who you live with.'

Phillip then pushed: 'Not all families are like yours though, some families do care, you have to be careful how you do something like this.'

The caller said: 'At the end of the day your happiness is the most important thing. You have to be selfish  you don't have to rub it in peoples faces...

'I strongly believe that if people love you they want you to be happy and if that makes you happy then it shouldn't matter'. 

Speaking about telling his daughters, he said: 'I wasn't easy [telling my daughters]. But they are so amazing in their love and support. They jumped up and gave me a hug, a big hug, a long hug' (pictured in public together for the last time before coming out at National Television Awards earlier this month)

Last week, Phillip spoke about his battles with keeping his secret and the relief of coming out. Phil met Stephanie when she was a BBC production Assistant and he was working for the BBC Children's television.

Speaking about telling his daughters, he said: 'It wasn't easy [telling my daughters]. But they are so amazing in their love and support. They jumped up and gave me a hug, a big hug, a long hug...

'They hugged Steph and said, 'It's OK, this is fine.' We will always be a family. We'll always be that. My mum has been on the phone all morning, 'Hope you're OK.' I told her and she said, 'OK, I don't care.' And that's the same with everyone.'

Speaking about how his mum Pat, 83, reacted: ‘It was the same with my mum, my mum is watching this today...

'She’s been on the phone this morning – hope you’re OK. I went down to see her, she’s down in Cornwall, and I went down to see her... And I told her and she said "oh, OK, well, I don't care" - and that's the same with everyone.'

You never know what's going on in someone's seemingly perfect life, what issues they are struggling with, or the state of their wellbeing - and so you won't know what has been consuming me for the last few years. With the strength and support of my wife and my daughters, I have been coming to terms with the fact that I am gay. 

This is something that has caused many heart-breaking conversations at home. I have been married to Steph for nearly 27 years, and we have two beautiful grown-up daughters, Molly and Ruby.

My family have held me so close: they have tried to cheer me up, to smother me with kindness and love, despite their own confusion. Yet still I can't sleep and there have been some very dark moments.

My inner conflict contrasts with an outside world that has changed so very much for the better. Today, quite rightly, being gay is a reason to celebrate and be proud. Yes, I am feeling pain and confusion, but that comes only from the hurt that I am causing to my family.

Steph has been incredible - I love her so very much. She is the kindest soul I have ever met. My girls have been astonishing in their love, hugs and encouraging words of comfort. Both mine and Steph's entire families have stunned me with their love, instant acceptance and support.

Of course they are worried about Steph but I know they will scoop us both us.

My friends are the best, especially Holly, who has been so kind and wise - and who has hugged me as I sobbed on her shoulder. At ITV, I couldn't hope to work with more wonderful, supportive teams.

Every day on This Morning, I sit in awe of those we meet who have been brave and open in confronting their truth - so now it's my turn to share mine. This will probably all come as something and I understand, but only by facing this, by being honest, can I hope to find peace in my mind and a way forward. Please be kind, especially to my family.
