Prince Andrew passes baton to Eugenie and Beatrice, 'Sins of father can't impact children' - Express

On his official website he is listed as having associations with 181 charities but the controversy following his BBC Newsnight interview means some of these partnerships are becoming untenable. A source close to the said: “He will more likely than not take the decision to step down, in order to save all the rest of his charities from having to make the decision themselves. But a Buckingham Palace source has suggested his patronages might only be “temporarily mothballed” until the scandal passes.

Many of the royal patronages that the Duke commands have been surrendered and placed in the hands of his children.

A source close to the Duke of York yesterday said that it was “the logical step” for his daughters to replace him as patrons of a range of organisations he has supported and that “the sins of the father should not be visited on the children”, the Sunday Times has reported.

Sir Stephen Bubb, director of the think tank Charity Futures, said: “The decision on patronage is a decision for the charity itself to decide what is most appropriate.”

Several charities and cultural groups have now cut ties with Prince Andrew and he is “considering imminently resigning” from those that he still maintains links with.

The Duke’s daughter Eugenie, 29, is co-founder of the Anti-Slavery Collective, a group that campaigns against modern slavery, including what it describes as “people in forced sexual exploitation”.

Palace insiders hope the fall-out from the Duke of York’s association with convicted paedophile Jeffery Epstein does not affect his daughter’s ability to give patronage to charities associated with children and vulnerable young adults.

Both Princesses have joined their mother as patrons of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Around 3,000 organisations have charitable patronage from a member of the British royal family.

JUST IN: Could Prince Andrew withdrawal from royal role be permanent?

While some claim that royal support stimulates wider giving and volunteering, it’s not possible to capture any specific “added value” of such connection.

Research shows, most donors are driven by a personal connection to a cause.

The Queen is a patron to more than 600 charities, “good causes” that have a combined donated income of around £1.5 billion.

But some evidence that a royal association helps charities stand out in a crowded and competitive sector, is found in the annual Charity Brand Index.

Every year the index, which monitors awareness, trust and likelihood of donating, finds a disproportionate number of top charities feature the word “royal” in their title.

In 2019, three of the top ten enjoyed this mark of favour: the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Royal British Legion, and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution
