Andrew Scott made "more mistakes than anyone else" in 1917 - digitalspy.com

A hot priest he may make, but Andrew Scott isn't quite so hot at playing a World War I solider under pressure, according to 1917 director Sam Mendes.

Following the film's success at the Golden Globes last weekend, Sam Mendes has been reflecting on 1917's tricky filming process, revealing that Scott in particular struggled with its 'one-shot' approach.

The war movie, which follows two soldiers as they cross enemy lines to deliver a life-saving message, is told entirely in real-time and is edited as though it's one continuous, two-hour take.

Requiring a forensic attention to detail, Mendes explained that capturing something as small as a trip, a costume out of place, or a faulty prop can scupper the work before it, meaning the cast and crew "have to start again".

Speaking to the BBC, the director name-checked Fleabag's Andrew Scott as the biggest offender for triggering re-shoots, recalling one slip-up that shall forever be known as "lighter-gate".

"Andrew, in his only scene, made more mistakes than anyone else," Mendes said, suggesting that the actor was incapable of lighting a cigarette.

"Never smoke, ever," Scott added. "On anything – on stage, on screen – never use a cigarette lighter."

"You can have seven minutes of magic, and then if someone trips, or a lighter doesn't work, or if an actor forgets half a line, it means none of it is useable and you have to start again," Mendes continued.

Understandably, Scott felt pretty bad about fudging his one and only scene in the film, admitting that he didn't "want to be that guy".

"You have to work alongside the camera team and the extras but the great challenge of it is you don't want to mess it up, because you're only in it for five minutes," he said.

Misbehaving lighters aside, 1917 has been showered with praise since its release, with Digital Spy calling it "powerful and breathtaking" and "the first must-see movie of the year."

1917 is out now.
