'Not so much jumping the shark as somersaulting over it': Dracula finale leaves fans disappointed as its modern day twist fails to hit the mark

  • WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for The Dark Compass
  • The episode took the blood-sucking Count into the 21st Century
  • There, he meets Van Helsing's descendant and a willing bride, Lucy Westenra
  • Despite the high stakes viewers made it clear that the finale 'ruined' the show

After an impressive first two episodes fans were left disappointed by Dracula's third outing, which aired on Friday night.

Taking the blood-sucking Count into the 21st Century, viewers couldn't help but be unimpressed by the lacklustre episode, titled The Dark Compass.

Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat's adaptation sees the vampire (Claes Bang) navigate modern life, as well as meet Sister Agatha Van Helsing's descendant (Dolly Wells) and his first willing victim, Lucy Westenra (Lydia West).

Opening where the second episode left off, Dracula was taken into custody by Van Helsing's successor and her team, who were funded by Mina Murray following the death of Jonathan Harker in episode one.

After enlisting the help of his lawyer, Frank (Mark Gatiss), the vampire manages to escape her clutches and by pure chance is introduced to his future bride Lucy, who willingly gives her blood to him for the fun of it.

But the count decides to make her shed her mortal coil and be with him forever, and in shocking scenes is cremated, despite being conscious of what is happening, and arrives to Dracula's door as a burned corpse.

Her former love interest Jack (Matthew Beard) helps to relieve her of her pain by putting a stake through her heart, while Dracula and Sister Agatha, whose spirit now lives in her descendant, go head-to-head.

In their final confrontation, Van Helsing informs Dracula that she can do what he cannot, die, and he will have to live with his shame, but the Count chooses to drink her deadly blood instead, thus ending his life with hers.

Despite the high stakes it was clear to viewers that the finale failed to hit the mark, and they took to Twitter in their droves to express their disappointment.

Not mincing their words, one fan said of the episode: 'Not so much jumping the shark as somersaulting over it.'

While another claimed that the show had been 'ruined' by the finale, while another hit out at co-creators: 'Way to ruin #Dracula guys... what the f*** was that s***'

Expressing their frustration with the show's modern day twist, another said: 'Why'd they have to ruin such a promising start by dragging #Dracula into the 21st century.'

While another viewer reiterated: 'I thought #Dracula had the potential to be a classic series after the stellar 1st episode, but this 3rd episode has no business dragging him into the 21st century.

'The whole point of resurrecting a legend is to reinvigorate it, not reinvent it. Rambling, nonsensical & pretentious.'

Opting to be brutally honest about the epsiode, another said: 'Well that series took a horizontal jump off a tall cliff pretty quickly didn't it.'
