Fury in Canada over possible Meghan Markle and Prince Harry security costs - Express

The Duke and Duchess announced on Wednesday their plan to stand down as “senior” royals. They plan to split their time between Britain and North America, with Canada or California seen as likely candidates for their second base.

However if the couple move to Canada it could start a row over who pays for the couple’s expensive security.

The Governor General, who represents the Queen in Canada, is protected by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and there is speculation the same could be required for Meghan and Harry.

This could be the case even if the couple continue to have a British royal protection squad.

Speaking to the Sunday Telegraph Aaron Wudrick, director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, raised concerns about the cost.

He said: “I thought it was very interesting when they used the term ‘financial independence’.

“The details remain to be seen. There’s always going to be a cost and the public deserve some prudence.

“I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect us to pay for everything the way we do for a royal visit.

“If they're going to make Canada a second home, a good step in the right direction would be to pay for at least part of it, and not rely on taxpayers to fund their entire lifestyle.”

They said: “The Royal Canadian Mounted Police cannot speculate on hypothetical situations.”

Separately 89 percent of those who took part in an Express.co.uk poll felt the couple have disrespected the Queen.

It total 11,729 out of the 13,138 who voted came to this conclusion.

In contrast, only 1,227 (nine percent) voted that they had not disrespected Her Majesty while only 182 said they did not know.

Commenting on the poll, one user said: "Of course they disrespected the Queen, but in doing so they disrespected the whole Nation."

Another said: "They disrespected the Queen, the Royal family, the whole population of the UK and even themselves.

"That won't concern them though."

Meghan and Harry were married in May 2018 at Windsor Castle’s St George’s Chapel.

A year later Meghan gave birth to the couple’s son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.

The young royal holds both British and American citizenship reflecting his parent’s heritage.
