Around 80,000 people have already signed a petition by Victoria MP Laurel Collins, which says the couple’s security should not be funded by the Canadian taxpayer. Fears have risen over who will fund the couple’s 24-hour-a-day security following their resignation from Royal Family life. And now the politician has taken matters into her own hands.
Ms Collins is the MP for Victoria, which is where Meghan and Prince Harry are currently residing with their baby Archie.
They are on Vancouver Island to begin their attempts at leading a “financially independent” life.
Earlier this month, they stood down as senior royals in order to make the move.
However, it remains unclear who will actually foot their bills.
Warning shots have been fired from the UK over the the funding.
According to the MailOnline, one former Home Office minister said the British people could be faced with an “enormous bill”.
But, they did say a deal to share the bill between UK and Canada - where the Sussexes want to spend their time - could be reached.
This it not good enough for Ms Collins.
It calls for “no taxpayer support” for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
In just six days, nearly 100,000 people have signed up.
The organisation’s director, Aaron Wudrick said: “Canadians are pleased to welcome the Duke and Duchess to Canada, but have made it crystal clear that taxpayers should not be forced to support them while they are living here.
“Our view is that Prime Minister Trudeau needs to respect the wishes of Canadians and make clear that while the Duke and Duchess are welcome in Canada, they must pay their own way!”
