People are angry that Margot Robbie has been nominated twice in the same BAFTA category - cosmopolitan.com

The BAFTA nominations are out, and have received backlash from fans who are criticising the lack of diversity.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards are held on 2 February 2020 at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and ahead of the ceremony, a full list of nominations were released on Tuesday [7 January].

Many film fans took to Twitter to criticise the list, due to the fact all the nominated actors are white - leading to the #BaftasSoWhite hashtag appearing on Twitter - and there are no women filmmakers shortlisted for best director or best film. Many have called the oversight "frustrating" and "disappointing".

Nowhere has this criticism been more prevalent than in the Best Supporting Actress category, which sees Margot Robbie nominated twice for her roles in Bombshell and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

While Margot obviously had no say in the matter, Twitter users have questioned why the likes of Jennifer Lopez in Hustlers and Lupita Nyong'o in Us didn't get the nod, while Margot gets two nominations.

"Not to take anything away from Margot Robbie’s hard work and talent, but #BAFTA snubbing Lupita Nyong'o, Alfre Woodard, Cynthia Erivo & Awkwafina, and instead nominating her twice in one category is CRAZY and A CHOICE by the members," one person wrote.

Responding to the backlash, Emma Baehr, director of awards and membership, told Variety:

"We would like there to be more diversity in the nominations, but this continues to be an industry-wide issue. We’d like to see more diverse nominations and we will work harder and push the industry more. But that shouldn’t take away from those who were nominated [this year]."
