STARS of The Masked Singer were banned from spending more than 20 minutes in their bizarre costumes – to stop them going crazy.
Show bosses brought in the strict limit after taking inspiration from Disney World’s rules for actors playing cartoon characters in their theme parks.
Derek McLean and Daniel Nettleton, executive producers of the Saturday-night hit, told how the rule was rigorously policed to prevent the show descending into chaos.
Lifting the lid on the secrets of 2020’s most talked about TV show, Derek revealed: “The stars were only allowed in their costumes for 20 minutes.
“We took inspiration from Disney. That’s how long Minnie and Mickey Mouse can be in their costumes before going doolally."
“We ended up being quite strict about it. You don’t want celebrities in costumes going crazy all over the place.”
The pair also told how the celeb disguised as Queen Bee suffered crippling claustrophobia when they first tried on the bizarre get-up.
Meanwhile, the giant blue Monster costume is so large that the star concealed inside has built-in shelves for storing their lyrics and belongings.
All of the bespoke costumes — which cost thousands of pounds a piece — were built using a body double to avoid the designers knowing who they were kitting out.
Efforts to keep the show’s participants secret didn’t end there.
All contestants had code names — former Labour Party MP and postman Alan Johnson — who was dressed as Pharaoh — was referred to as “Stamp”.
Ex-EastEnders actress Patsy Palmer, seen performing as Butterfly, was “Square” and Justin Hawkins, rock singer for The Darkness, kitted out as Chameleon, was known as “Light”.
While on set and out of costume, each star was required to wear a helmet and visor, complete with a sign reading: “Do not talk to me.”
Rules stipulated they could be accompanied by one person only, who also had to be disguised in a costume.
Daniel revealed how Patsy — the second celebrity to be unmasked — took her orders so seriously that she wore the helmet, visor and sign to a hotel breakfast before filming.
He said: “She couldn’t believe it when we told her afterwards she could have just put it on in the car. We were all laughing at the image of her in her helmet at the buffet. But that’s how seriously the celebs were taking it."
“It was written into their contracts that they couldn’t tell anyone, even their families, what was going on. In the end they were as worried about their secret getting out as we were."
"And as much as the costumes took a bit of getting used to, they all loved them in the end and wanted to keep them. Justin really struggled with his mask at first because he’s used to moving the microphone while he’s singing and he wasn’t able to do that."
But now he keeps calling me, trying to get hold of the mask because he really wants to keep it.”
Last night, former Manchester United player Teddy Sheringham was unmasked as Tree and booted off the show. None of the programme’s judges — Jonathan Ross, Rita Ora, Davina McCall and Ken Jeong — predicted it was him.
Since the show’s launch earlier this month, speculation about the identities of the contestants has reached fever pitch. Derek and Dan insist that fans and judges are yet to guess the correct celebrities.
However, bosses are paying close attention to the speculation, as it provides them with inspiration for stars to approach if ITV commissions a second series. Derek said: “We obviously know who is under the masks but we still often think, ‘Oh, that’s a really good guess’, which is hilarious.
“But some of the guesses have also made us think, ‘They would be a great person to have on board’.
“So you never know, some of those guesses might become reality.”
Dan went on: “We haven’t been given any assurances by ITV about a second series but everyone seems happy with how the first one has gone, so we are hopeful.”
