Women's rights activist slams Bafta's decision to nominate Margot Robbie twice in the SAME category - Daily Mail

Women's rights activist accuses BAFTA of 'deliberate dereliction of duty' over all-white acting nominations - and insists stars like Lupita Nyong'o should have been considered

A women's right's activist has slammed the British Film Academy's decision to nominate Margot Robbie twice in the same category, while ignoring the likes of Lupita Nyong'o and Jennifer Lopez

Lawyer Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, from London, appeared on Good Morning Britain today where she spoke out against the BAFTAs following an online race row over the all-white acting nominations.

She said that she didn't believe there was a racist intent, but said the lack of consideration of diversity was a 'deliberate dereliction of duty' on behalf of BAFTA.

#BAFTAsSoWhite began trending last night, with Academy boss, Amanda Berry, admitting she was 'very disappointed' over the lack of diversity, which saw not a single actor of colour honoured in the major acting categories.

Margot, 29, was nominated as Best Supporting Actress for her roles in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Bombshell and Dr Shola has insisted that the acadamy should have considered other 'options' - like Harriet star Cynthia Erivo.

She said: 'You can't tell me that there are no options within the leading and supporting actresses.

'You've got the likes of Cynthia Erivo in Harriet, you've got Lupita Nyong'o in Us, Jennifer Lopez in Hustlers.

'There are many very good talented actresses that did very well, let's not forget that Margot Robbie was nominated twice in the same category.

'We're only talking about nominees, we're not even talking about winning - but how can a demographic win when you're not even nominating them?'

The 2020 shortlist also saw Jennifer Lopez, 50, who is of Puerto Rican heritage, miss out on a nomination for her acclaimed role in Hustlers.

British actress Cynthia Erivo, 32, who received two Golden Globe nominations for Harriet, did not receive any nominations at the BAFTAs.

Despite the lack of diversity in the nominations, Dr Shola doesn't feel like the white majority of the Bafta voting panel is the main offending factor- and believes that diversity is all about 'mindset'.

'I think that it's definitely a key aspect of it, but for me I would say that diversity is not just about what you look like - it's your mindset', she said.

'Within the film industry it is your responsibility to honour recognise and celebrate the diversity of the demographic.

'Diversity like any other form of progression must be consciously intentional, it must be more than a deceleration - it must be a demonstration.

'It must be more than a claim to aspire to, it must be a manifestation. So as far as I'm concerned this #BAFTAsSoWhite is a deliberate dereliction of duty of the British film Academy.

Awkwafina, who is of Chinese descent and picked up a Golden Globe for Best Actress on Sunday, fail to pick up a nomination for The Farewell. She is recognised in this year's rising star category.

Dr Shola believes that offering awards in Rising Stars categories, while ignoring non-white stars in leading categories is 'part of the problem'.

She explained: 'Part of the problem is that for the longest time, it feels like we ought to be grateful, because we're being given crumbs.

'"Oh Awkwafina,  she's a rising star" - i'm sorry it took women 100 years to get the right to vote, we are now in 2020 - those in ethnic minorities do not have to wait for the rest of the world to catch up to us.

'there's a lack of understanding there,  by not recognizing [their talent] what you're doing is taking away their opportunity.

'taking away equal opportunity for them in their career is directly related to being honoured and recognised.'
