Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe reveals he turned to booze during filming as he struggled with his £90million success - The Sun

HARRY Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has revealed he turned to booze while filming the last instalments of the hit film franchise.

The actor – now 30 and worth £90 million – struggled with growing up in the limelight and finding success at such a young age, but not knowing what the future held for him.

He said: “I definitely think a lot of the drinking that happened towards the end of Potter, and for a little bit after it finished, it was panic and not knowing what to do next, and not being comfortable enough in who I was to remain sober.”

Daniel became one of the most famous actors in the world when he was plucked from obscurity at the age of 11, landing the role of the schoolboy wizard.

He played Harry in eight films, which are among the highest-grossing of all-time.

Speaking on Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, he said: "If I went out and if I got drunk I'd suddenly be aware of there being an interest in that.

"Because it's not just like a drunk guy, it's 'Oh Harry Potter's getting drunk in the bar' and that carries its own kind of interest for people and also a slightly mocking interest because it is inherently funny for people."

Daniel said he would often deal with the pressure by drinking more before he decided to quit booze altogether at the age of 20.

On giving up drinking,  the star said it was "weird" to realise he had to be sober at such a young age, but he was ultimately "very, very happy" to do it.

He added: "But I will always be fascinated and frustrated by the question of, is this something that would have happened anyway or was this to do with Potter?

"But I will never know. It runs in my family, generations back. Definitely not my mum and dad, I hasten to add that."

He went to say how he feels guilty about his success and still struggles to come to terms with it when he auditions.

“I'll always have a part of my brain that is going – when I first walk into a rehearsal room – 'Everyone just thinks you are here because of Harry Potter', and in a large part they are right,” he said.

“So you have to make sure you are bringing something else to the table. But if that's the thing that makes me work hard, then fine.

“I have been insanely lucky and I think probably I have a vague sense of guilt about having something so amazing happen to you so young.”
