Hollyoaks star David Easter has revealed he is staying in a rehabilitation centre during the coronavirus crisis as he continues treatjment for his ongoing battle with alcoholism.

The actor, 60, took to Twitter on Friday to tell fans that he was 'safe and making progress' while being in lockdown at a facility in Kent.

David began by writing: 'Apologies to all my Twitter Family for not being active over the last couple of months, I will explain why later.

'Just want to show my gratitude to Our Brilliant NHS and all the emergency services, our carers, key workers and everyone that is fighting this plague.'

In a second tweet he went on: 'You are absolutely Amazing!! So Courageous! This plague is unprecedented, but the United people’s of our Beautiful planet will win this war! Everyone please keep safe, adhere to all regulations and we Will conquer.'

While in a third tweet, he revealed: 'Forgive Me, last message, as I only have use of my phone for a few hours.

'I’m in lockdown in a rehabilitation home in Kent, which treats substance abuse and Alcoholism, I’ve been an Alcoholic for over twenty years. I’m safe and making progress, thank You Friends Always.'

MailOnline have contacted Hollyoaks representatives for comment. 

David portrayed Hollyoaks villain Mac Nightingale up until March 2019, when his character was murdered at the hands of serial killer Breda McQueen.

After revealing his current situation, David received numerous messages of support from friends and fans, who wished him well during his rehabilitation.

Tanya Franks, one of David's former co-stars, wrote: 'David, it's been 17 years since we worked together or had contact. I'm so glad to read your message and sending you strength. Stay safe, keep well, and continue to be brave - you can do this!'

Another person added: 'Best wishes for the road to recovery. Stay safe.' 

While one added: 'Good luck on your journey of recovery. It's a beautiful journey and if you work through the steps you will be shown things beyond your wildest dreams xx sending my kind thoughts your way.'

Grateful for the positive response, David wrote in another tweet: 'I’d forgotten how Twitter can be so Amazing!! Thank You with all my heart, for all your Messages of Support, you’re Awesome!!!'
