PRINCE Harry emailed the Royal Family to tell them he was quitting the Firm, a royal expert has said.
The Duke of Sussex reportedly messaged the Queen and his father, Prince Charles, in January saying he wanted to step away from royal duties.
And just days later, despite being warned not to rush into anything, he and wife Meghan issued a statement to the world announcing their plans.
The Daily Mail reports a source said: "They [the Queen and Charles] understood that he and Meghan wanted something different and were willing to help but it was complicated.
"There were issues like security and funding, visas and tax, which neither of them had thought through. Harry was told to put his request in writing and come up with some ideas.
"He thought his family were stonewalling and decided to push the nuclear button.
"Unfortunately he was just too stubborn, blinkered and bitter to see sense.
"Yet his father had always made clear that while he favours a slimmed down monarchy, Harry and his family would be a significant part of that."
Staff have revealed the shock in Buckingham Palace at the "Megxit" announcement, with the Queen reportedly having no warning.
Harry was said to have left the Queen "deeply distressed" by his sensational announcement he and Meghan would be quitting as senior royals and moving to North America.
SHOCK STATEMENT
No other members of the Royal Family were reportedly consulted before the shock statement was issued in January and the "hurt" Monarch was taken by surprise.
A source said: "Everyone believes the Sussexes have been deeply disrespectful."
Harry reportedly defied instructions from the Queen not to announce their plans, after she requested he hold off until he talked it over with his father.
And Prince Charles told his son he needed more time after he was sent a draft proposal about his future role, particularly on the issue of funding.
If he and Meghan choose to settle in the US permanently, Harry may have to formally let go of any nobility from another country.
This week we revealed the pair fled from their bolthole on Vancouver Island to Los Angeles amid the coronavirus crisis.
The Sussexes will set up a new home close to Hollywood, where we are told they are currently living in lockdown with their ten-month-old son, Archie.
Their plan to quit the UK was revealed in a Sun world exclusive in January.
As thousands of Brits applauded the doctors and nurses on the front line from their homes and on their balconies on Thursday night, the couple took to Instagram to also offer their support.
"Thanking you for all that you continue to do!" a post from The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's official Instagram account read.
"Applauding you from across the pond."
