He said: "We will keep naming and shaming, both here and on Twitter.

"Anyone who's behaving like this needs to be named, shamed and dealt with. Until the message gets home to these thick skulls.

"This is a fight we're all in. People are going to die and the priority is saving lives."

Dr Hilary Jones was equally as angered by the vile attack.

He said: "I hope he goes to prison for a long time. This is repulsive behaviour, it needs to stop. Make an example of this guy."

Earlier in the show Piers stunned Charlotte Hawkins by saying "b*****d" live on air as he read out a rude birthday card from pal Vinnie Jones.

The outspoken host turns 55 today and couldn't resist sharing hardman Vinnie's message with the nation.

Reading the message, he said: "Happy birthday you total legend. And in smaller writing I meant total b*****d."

However, it didn't sit too well with co-star Charlotte, who said: "Can you say that on live TV?

"I apologise on Piers’s behalf to anyone offended."

It prompted Piers to groan: "Are we still getting offended by stuff?

"I’m sorry for anyone who was offended."

Earlier in the show Piers told how Cheryl has been texting him regularly during the coronavirus crisis.

The host praised the singer's recent idea for drive-thru restaurants to be used by food stores to safely provide people with their essentials.

Talking on today's show, he said: "Cheryl Cole, who has been texting me quite regularly, really engaged, really involved, trying to see what she can do to help.

"I thought it was a great idea. They're all set up to do that. They're all sitting there empty. She wasn't sure if she should tweet. I'm glad she did. She got a good response.

"That's the kind of thing that could be really helpful."

On Saturday Cheryl shared her idea on Twitter.

She posted: "I have an idea.. I haven’t got into any of the logistics yet but as a concept ..as there are now so many drive through restaurants closed.. could we partner them with food stores, set up an app for locals and use their drive thru’s as a safer way for ppl to shop essentials?"

Replying to a fan, she added: "So there would be an app and I guess like click and collect. But you would order and then collect it through the window at the drive thru. But for essentials."

It comes as 50,000 food boxes are being delivered to the vulnerable within days - in an effort not seen since the Second World War.

Cans of tinned goods, loo roll and cornflakes are being sorted into food parcels for those who can’t leave their homes for 12 weeks.

Fruit, pasta and packs of custard creams are also in the boxes for those who have no nearby support from family or friends.

Ministers revealed the first two thousand have been delivered this weekend to those stuck at home.

The mission is being overseen by Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick with the aid of military planners and councils.
